As far as the recipes are concerned, there's an initial fee to "unlock" the recipe, after which you can brew as many times as you like with no increase in the material costs for that recipe. The essence recipes are split into two cost groups, with one group, the first two recipes, requiring 20 of each material and the second group, the second pair of recipes, requiring 50 of each material. Almost every alchemy recipe additionally requires 100 cheese; exceptions are the Earth essence recipe, which for some reason requires only 20 cheese, and recipes 5-8 in the Alchemy menu, which instead require certain amounts of flasks.
