He's mobile, has great stats, and hits hard. Crossbow can minimize his movement in certain fights. Which will offset the normal harsh Vartan movement penalty.
Late game you can turn him into a buccaneer if you wish. Give him dual blades and go to town on the enemy backline.

They're not really that good a class, his stats are just so good that you don't notice.
If I leave him as a vartan, I usually slap a 2-h crossbow on him, though in the early game, since he's wind element, a dagger and either shield or 1-h bow/xbow works pretty well. First dagger finisher is absolutely busted in the early game.
What about just hiring another bird guy? Doesn't he turn up every so often at the merc shop?
Canopus is given a bunch of extra stat points because of main [side] character syndrome. But if you want more of a challenge, you can use a generic unit and give it a name of your choosing.
