Games like Tactics Ogre
Hey all,

I loved this game back when I played it on the PS1, but like everyone I am unsure about the price tag and will have to think about it when it releases.

However while we are waiting for this game, are there any other games like Tactics Ogre on the PC?

Fell Seal was a pretty good game. You could even customize the appearance of everyone (or at least the humans) in your army.

Folks I can answer my own question.

It's not as similar to Tactics Ogre as Fell Seal, but people say it's something like Ogre Battle 64 or something.

But I'm really enjoying it.

I've lost track of how many times I played the hell out of Ogre Battle 64...

+1 for Fell Seal. Pretty much a straight up copy, err homage, of Tactics Ogre/FFT mechanics including job changes.

Interesting story, decent characters. DLC lets you really grind if that's your thing. Otherwise, difficulty is completely customizable so you can play at whatever pace you like.

Hex based, but is quite challenging. The story isn't that good though.

Ah I didn't know it arrived on Steam! I loved the original game from PS1.

Fell Seal and Symphony of War are excellent recommendations, with Fell Seal being a bit more like TO (several hero units against a larger number of enemies) and SoW being more of an army/troop management tactical experience.

Cascade Tactics is in early access, and will be for a while, but works really well as a sandbox style game, with many different classes to choose from, and has a primary and secondary job system that I find really compelling. Check that out for sure.

I'd also recommend Troubleshooter. It has a bit of a slow start, but later on as your team grows it offers tons of customizability through its extensive Mastery system.

The fact that the above poster recommends a game which costs $30 for what's effectively a demo (3ish hours maybe?) that doesn't even represent how the game is going to turn out means you should probably not listen to anything they have to say.

I think the poster was trying to be helpful, but I feel that user recommendations should be more based on your own experience. Steam's algorithm can help you find similar games for yourself, whereas a forum allows you to give context.

I've been following Unsung Story for a while. Very strange and troubling development cycle, with tons of red flags. Development group changed completely and for a long time the only updates have been documents detailing the various classes. I'll continue to watch it from afar (def. don't recommend anyone should buy it), but I don't think a 2023 release is likely.

I do not recommend that you buy this last game that I showed, only the 3 previous ones. I'm just saying to see.

The Last Remnant is another good one with a lot of similarities to Tactics Ogre.

It's not on PC unless you emulate it, but there is a prequel that came out for the GBA 'Tactics Ogre: Knights of Lodis'. I think it uses the same engine as FFTA, which is honestly a fantastic SRPG as well if you can look past the story.

As for PC, I've heard a lot of people mention Triangle Strategy but I don't know much about it.

Whatever you end up getting, make sure it isn't Arcadian Atlas. I was good friends with the dev...before her brother and she stole several of my ideas I had suggested or implemented in my own mods/games, without so much as a thank you. She also cheated on her previous husband with her current husband...who is a game developer as well. And SOMEHOW they managed to get a publisher, after YEARS of trying, after her relationship with her current husband kicked up. Almost like...she knew he has connections with publishers and used his clout to get one for her own game. After receiving $90,000 from a Kickstarter, with pretty much zero work to show for it over the course of 4 years.

Sorry for the rant, but I see Arcadian Atlas show up often when people talk about TRPGs to look into or play. Twin Otter Studios doesn't deserve a dime of support.
