If it works well it won’t look any different, but you’ll get a boost in performance.
In lame's term, the game will render the shaders at higher quality where it matters the most and lower it's settings automatically in parts where you probably won't be looking. So in the same image, textures, and shadows would be higher quality right in front of you in the middle of the screen, but will be lower in the corners, in the ceiling above you and places that the player won't be paying attention to anyway. It's dynamic and adjust from place to place.
Imagine dynamic resolution, right? That adjust according to your performance to maintain frame rate, but this time is with the overall graphics quality in a smart way.
It can also get affect by movement... When standing still, graphics settings will look higher than during fast movement as you won't be able to see small details anyway.
So.. turning on, does compromise image quality to certain degree while try to make it imperceptible in order to provide better performance.
