Hey neighbours!

Hope you're having a good weekend! This is just a bug fixing update to take care of most of the currently open tickets.

Biggest fixes:

Birch Tower 4 - If you got stuck during the minigame and had to leave, this should now retrigger when you come back to the Amenities room so you can complete.
Maple Place 2 - If you have paid the loan but it didn't tick off in your notes, when you load in now it should register and trigger the related phone call.
Cedar Court 2 - If the Parlor Palms weren't ticking off in your notes, it was because they were in separate stacks in your inventory, they should now tick off regardless of the stacks.
Moving - If you experience a problem during moving, it should now be detected. If you leave and come back midway through the move it should retrigger. I have added a "Cancel move" option to the Help menu now too as well as a button where you can refund yourself the payments in case of any issues <3
Pets - Fixed a crash when using the last amount of pet food in a single item stack (and also an issue preventing some of the non-cats from registering food/water)
Ferris Wheel - I've added a shop where you can buy a new ticket if you lose yours. After purchasing you will need to leave the area and come back to trigger the event.

Events note:

If you are mid cutscene/mini game and you exit the room via the taxi or quit to apartment, in some situations you may not be able to retrigger that event. I’m going through them all at the moment to confirm and add extra conditions that force resets but there are a lot of events so please let me know if it happens to you via a bug report ticket so I can prioritise that event.

General:

- NPC schedules - Added checks to prevent edge cases of spawning or schedule during following actions or events.

- Sitting - Can no longer sit during mini games.

- BT Amenities - Fixed some stray wrong tiles.

- News - Updated the way that UI processed news items to validate better before display.

- Tasks - Stopped listeners and various other events running during transitions and async events.

- Inventory triggers during cutscenes - Updated checks to recognise when items are in multiple inventory stacks. Also updated taking items during cutscenes to take from multiple stacks.

- Locations - Updated location finder to have better exit cases when locations are not found.

- Interactions - Adjusted special interactions during events and cutscenes to overwrite regular interactions more effectively.

- Shops - Add additional check to prevent shop staff spawning mid cutscene.

- ATMs - Changed amounts of deposit/withdrawals to be more useful from $10, $50, $100, $500 > $100, $500, $1000, $5000.

- Private Detective - Man Hunt - will now remove itself better if it detects you leaving mid hunt or save/loading.

- Passing out - Adjusted order of calls to try to prevent Hannah’s twin from spawning (not sure if I achieved this though…)

Interactions:

- Lottie - Adjusted trigger area for photos.

- Pots - Adjusted priority so that when a pot is held, the default action is “Place” not “Repot” unless you are within range of another pot.

- Minor NPCs - Turned off ability to face different ways when talking to them as they currently only have one direction of sprite and no one needs that nightmare.

- Private Detective - Gather Evidence - Reordered interaction priorities and detection triggers to trigger photos more easily.

Tutorials:

- Added ferris wheel shop where you can rebuy ticket if you lose yours (need to leave Garland Central and come back to retrigger the event).

- Move in loan - untied it from Ryan’s letter so it will still open even if you don’t read Ryan’s letter (lol sorry)

Events note:

- If you are mid cutscene/mini game and you exit the room or save/load, you may not be able to complete that event. I’m going through them all at the moment to add extra conditions to add force resets but there are a lot of events so please let me know if it happens to you so I can prioritise that event.

Petal Events:

- Updated event spawn logic so it fully quits to avoid conflict with PD mini games (to avoid petal events spawning during Man Hunt)

- Added a force exit case for cutscene resets in case pink bars somehow get stuck on.

- Ryan PE 1 - Updated following actions to prevent issues where Elle can sometimes force player off screen at end of scene leaving it to look like the player is invisible.

Building Events - Birch Tower:

- BT 1 - Fixed Oliver’s reset dialogue and adjusted ending dialogue progression.

- BT 4 - Fixed Oliver’s mini game reset dialogue.

- BT 4 - Added rescue conditions, if you leave the room or quit mid mini game it will now retrigger when you enter the Amenities room next. If you were stuck on this, please visit the Amenities room after updating to redo the event.

Building Events - Maple Place:

- MP 2 - Fixed extra diary entry not displaying on completion.

- MP 2 - Fixed phone occasionally not toggling off blocking the loan payment from completing the task. If you were unable to complete this because the task didn’t tick off after paying the loan, it should automatically play the thank you scene when you load in.

Building Events - Cedar Court:

- CC 2 - Updated placement of Leon in case the player enters from their apartment.

- CC 2 - Updated trigger to recognise when items are in multiple inventory stacks. If you were unable to trigger this because the palms weren’t ticking off when they were in multiple stacks, they should register now regardless.

- CC 6 - Fixed a crash when furniture wasn’t created quickly enough for their updated placement.

Moving apartments:

- Adjusted moving process to be less memory intense and have more exit checks in case something goes wrong.

- Added move status to save file so if you quit or exit the room mid-move it should restart when you reenter your apartment.

- You now get a free hammer in the new apartment to make up for the fact that the furniture placement is so janky.

- Help - Added button to help menu to cancel a move (and get refunded if possible).

- Help - Added a button to help menu to give yourself $1000 so anyone who had a failed move can get a refund.

- Fixed issued with move in letter resending and loan reopening if you move to a second building.

Pets:

- Fixed crash when using last use of single pet food item to refill bowl.

- Fixed non-cat animals not eating/drinking overnight in some situations.

Save files:

- Reworked how files/backups are assigned to slots in menus to prevent duplicated file ids across multiple slots.

- Default ids that match a slot number will be auto assigned to that slot eg. 000001 will be prioritised in slot 1, the rest are filled with most recent files.

- If more files than the max (4 Switch, 8 Desktop) are detected, the extras will be listed under your active files with a warning.

Backend:

- Added better trace logs for cutscene management.

- Added debug options to force countdowns.

- Cleaned up some unused cutscene elements.

2.0.0J - Nintendo Switch Launch and New Pets!

Hey neighbours!!

How have you been? It's suddenly getting colder here and I can't wait for Winter! It's later in the year than I was hoping but it's been a wild ride and I have exciting news today along with a game update.

🌸🌙🌸Moonlight in Garland is now available on Nintendo Switch!🌸🌙🌸

This has been in the works for a loooong time and I’m so excited to bring Garland to a new platform. Thank you all for your patience and support while I've been working on this, it feels like a huge achievement self publishing as a solo dev and I'm so relieved it's out!

Now let's get back to the Steam Update! We're updating two version from 2.0.0.H > 2.0.0.I > 2.0.0.J because 2.0.0.I was the Switch release version.

The most exciting features are:

Pets - 3 new cat designs and 3 dog options.
NPC pets now move in/out with them.
Updates level art at the Beach, Uni and a few things in the Farm
Wallpaper - 2 new wallpapers to match the flooring with lots of new colours
Back ups now display in the save area where you can manually restore them to the current file or delete.
Lots of QoL stuff especially for controllers in menus, registering custom controls etc.

Important notes:

From this version on, back ups and save files will be managed from a meta file. This will happen automatically but always please make a copy of your save folder before updating just in case!
Custom inputs have needed to be reset in this version to accommodate new custom controller support options.

What's next?

Now that Garland is on multiple platforms the update process is a little more time consuming so I’ll be updating every ~3 months but with larger amounts of new content each time. If you want to preview new content sooner, I have a beta branch available for testers but you'll need to grab the details from the thread in Discord[discord.gg].

The next thing I'll be working on will be crossing a bunch of the smaller features off the Roadmap[wiki.moonlightingarland.com] like new apps.

- This version fixes an issue where if a user backed up their Nintendo Switch account and restored it to a different user account, in rare circumstances save files weren’t being displayed in the save screen. On first load the files will now be updated and then displayed correctly.

General:

- Various typos and minor dialogue updates.

- Visual - Fixed random building shadows popping in and out.

- Player - Fixed diagonal visual jitter on player.

Tutorials:

- Tv tutorials - Updated images, adjusted CRT overlay

- Tutorial - Fixed popups reappearing if you save/load in on day 2 after picking apartment.

- Hotel - Bed in hotel now can’t be used on Day 2 during tutorials.

- Ferris Wheel - Attendant now spawns at all times but you can still only ride during the welcome tasks at night.

- Ramen - Added full health restore after eating.

Pets:

- Added 3 new cat designs (Grey, Siamese 1, Siamese 2)

- Added 3 dog options (Brown, Cream, Black)

- Added some new dog and cat default names.

- Some NPC’s pets will now move in and out with them if they live with you (Sophie’s: Spaghett and Meatball, Hannah: Ivy, Kirin: CatJake, Elle: Hemi)

- If you have an existing roommate, their pet should be added to your apartment automatically, you will need to take care of them too.

- Pet Bed UI - Updated handling of pet sprites, added NPC pet sprites and defaults.

Wallpaper:

- Added 2 new wallpapers (plain and tiled) with a bunch of colours.

- Updated wallpapers backend so they work the same way as flooring in items, room persistence and set up. Old wallpaper items should continue to work as is.

- Updated wallpaper shop to stock new options.

NPCS:

- Delivery dialogue now overrides after cutscene dialogue.

- Minor NPCs can now talk (sometimes)

- Sophie’s room - Removed the cat from her bed (It now visits only on Twilight Equinox to mess up her pillows)

Fishing:

- Controller - can now use joystick or pad.

- Default time is now 10 seconds.

Shops:

- Antiques shop - Added bed/fridge/cooking pot to default sold items in case of load issues. 

UI:

- Initiatives - Added notification to the list when a stamp is available.

- Initiatives - Selecting on the list will auto select the stamp if one is available (keyboard/controller)

- Inventory App - Now called Backpack

- Text Input - Max string set to 15 characters.

- Context menus - Fixed showing in wrong areas when GUI size is awkward for window size.

- Notifications - Removed some pointless notifications.

- Buttons - Added force set when changing tabs to jump around less.

- Tea/Cooking - Fixed sizing on smaller screens.

- Text Input - Can no longer be selected by keyboard or controller.

- Added option to decide what pauses when you leave the window.

Save files

- Files are now logged and controlled with a meta file.

- This will keep track of your save slots and the statuses.

- Nothing should change front end but if there’s a save you have in your folder that isn’t showing, you can delete the meta file and it will check again.

- PC/Mac: Note that it will only reference 8 slots so if you have a heap of files, you might need to move the ones you don’t want to use out of the folder to make sure it finds the right files.

Back ups:

- Fixed backups not being able to overwrite in some situations.

- Cleaned up back up logs.

Input:

- Added better support for controller/inputs.

- Keyboard - Added hold/release for keyboard UI navigation.

- Custom Input - Updated input to automatically register linked buttons. Eg. registering left press will also register left hold and left release.

- Controller - Added support for the joystick in menus and hold to move multiple buttons.

- Controller - Fixed conflicts with X/Y button when menus open.

- Controller - Updated inputs to register other presses like awkward D-Pad and hat buttons when we check for “any” input.

- Help - Fixed keyboard triggering during text input.

Optimisation/Backends:

- Depth sorting - Updated to avoid pop ins (meh still a wip)

- Various changes to back end areas for platform compliance

- Fixed some fruit loops and removed some old logs.

- Split out a bunch of scripts for readability.

- Fixed potential logging crashes from object_index

- Much better handling for async functions.

- Updated old script execute alt.

- Pets - Converted dictionary to structs

This release was mostly bug fixes and changes to make the game compatible with Nintendo Switch.  The main update was the addition of the back up list in the save areas to do manual restores.

This version was the release version for Nintendo Switch. PC/Mac skipped this version and went straight to 2.0.0.J.

General:

- Various optimisations and adjustments to accommodate Nintendo Switch.

- Various small fixes and typos.

- Train station tickets now open 6am-8pm

- Removed EA bed from random shop item rotation

- Titles - Fixed pink clouds overlapping train in some situations.

- NPCs - updated more functions to work on clamped_dt

- NPCs - Fixed walking away mid intro scene.

- NPCs - Added check to prevent talking during room change.

- Place labels - Fixed not showing in some situations.

- Logs - updated file clean ups

- Fishing - Updated fish behaviour to be more consistent.

- Fishing - Fixed possibility to soft lock after mini game in some situations.

- Depth sorting - Updated to avoid pop ins (meh still a wip)

- Festivals - Added force reset when starting new game during events.

- Tea Shop intro - Fixed NPCs not leaving afterwards. Fixed dialogue exiting early if you ask to listen again.

- Finance - Bank interest updated to 4%.

Files:

- Added list of backups to save area and option to restore.

- Converted to async file handling.

- Added max back ups and better clean up functions to prevent them overrunning.

How to fish?

I have the fishing rod, and it works to use it. The fish nibbles then bites, but then it gives me no prompts and it gets way. Do I need to click something to "hook" the fish? I've tried clicking, not clicking, and every time I fail. There are never any button prompts. Am I doing something wrong?...

My character is always not happy

Is it just me, it seems so hard in this game to keep my character happy. I interact with a load of birds to increase my happiness and then one second later i get the 'not happy' message. Its very frustrating right now and feels like a constant fight against low happiness. And when in this state the already slow walking speed is like a snail's pace!!...
