How to donate to museum?

Im used to in these kind of cozy games to dump donations in a box of some kind - is that not a thing in this game?

If i remember right, you need to go into the room where it gets displayed and interact with the spot it gets displayed at. The displays are divided into groups with each group being a category. So the spring crops are all grouped together for example. Find the group location for your item's category and interact with it.

That's right - you have to go to each batch of pillars "collection" and donate items to that collection individually. I highly recommend downloading the museum donation mod - it makes a HUGE difference since only like, 50% of items can be donated.
