Amazing art design, plenty of charm, story seems basic but fun, I REALLY wanted to get into this...but it has just the wrong kind of jank. The movement just doesn't vibe with me, the platforming sections just aren't great, and I'm not looking to have to replay these when I didn't enjoy them the first time. The beat 'em up aspect is nice once you start to get into it, but it's pretty basic and weirdly balanced. There's only two settings, hard and "relaxed." In hard the FIRST boss has a 1-hit-kill as his main move. On easy that does like 1/20th of your health. somehow still not as easy as you'd expect from that, but weird that there's such a massive difference.

I completely understand why it's so positively rated. But I just could not get into it.

im a total history nerd and this game being based on an actual historical figure had me very intrigued and i went and did some of my own research into the real Liao Tianding and other aspects of Taiwanese folklore and history and while the events of the game are not exactly historically accurate to say the least it still lead me to learning about a really interesting piece of history id never heard of before which is a really cool thing that a game hasn't really done for me in a long long time

besides that aspect the game itself is a damn masterpiece everything about it is near flawless
the combat is ultra fun and satisfying the movement is tight and responsive, the boss fights are immaculate with the first boss being the only real outlier but that may also be because of the fact you havent gathered many upgrades by that point,
the story while a bit cheesy at times is still very fun and well written with a lovely conclusion
the graphics are absolutely gorgeous the hand drawn 2D style is incredible, and other aspects look comic book and even water colour paint esq
the soundtrack is also great,

this game is an absolute must play
