They changed their mind on the f2p thing when they realized there was no money to be made from selling Moonstones. Because they give away piles of them. It's not really using a "mobile game model" any more. If it ever did.
95% off? That's inconceivable! (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Does that make Gameloft the man with 6 fingers on one hand?
I also could not resist.

To be serious, what I find inconceivable is after all this time, there are still those holding out for the game to be free,

cause Disney is scum when it comes to anything involving money. fired massive amount of the staff who worked on inside out 2 voiding contracts so they would have to pay them more because it was so successful
I am not here to say who can or cannot afford this game or who wants to invest. I tend to take the amount it costs to purchase and break it down in the time I have played the game and honestly... so worth. For what I paid in the time I have played ...its pennies. Buying moonstones is an option to anyone but does not take away from the game itself. Hope that helps someone make a decision. I have never purchased moonstones and still enjoy the game completely.

I think it is important to know exactly who was responsible for Gameloft revoking the free2play plans for Dreamlight Valley and that is the players of Speedstorm.
They didn't pay enough for the microtransactions to justify the expense of that game and therefore, Gameloft realized a free2play PC/Console game is not financially viable.

Basically, Gameloft could not afford to support this game if it was free2play, so we would not have it at all if they had kept that plan.

Honestly, I am confused, every game has a price tag and the games are all around $100 for Deluxe Editions, so why should Dreamlight Valley be different?
I am very low income and I was able to put away the money to buy the base game twice, plus 2 expansions.
I can not concieve of someone who lacks the funds to do this, if you want a game strongly enough, you find a way to save the money.

FYI, Disney has nothing to do with the management of this game, other then approving/denying content requests. They gave Gameloft a license to use their characters/properties and let them manage the production.
as far as not being free to play that was the wise thing to do, can only imagine how quick free to play would invite more hacking and endless trolling would ruin the experience.

those 100$+ games can ♥♥♥♥ right off. i own none of them. would say i have about 500 + video games and the most ive payed for any gamewas 35$ for mariokart double dash. most of my games i get for 1-2-3-5-rare case 20$ games. mostly from bundles and will scoop up anything thats free

Then I suggest you play Gameloft's Magic Kingdom, since that is a free2play game.
However, the game is much more grind intensive and half the Villagers are behind a Lootbox paywall.
Therefore you'll be happier playing Dreamlight Valley.

This is my own personal experience, since I play both games.

I never heard about DDLV would be free. Since there will be more DLCs on the coming, I think it now would be a good model. Why? Easy: you try the game for free. If you like it and want more content, you can buy DLCs.
