outside my house
outside Remy's restaurant
next to Moana's boat
a couple in my house for unusual stuff.
Here is an example pic showing the chests outside my house. The ones I am facing are for various biome flowers-sorted by one or two biomes each. At the far end (out of sight in the photo)I keep my spices in the last chest.

Behind me are various colored chests with a lot of building materials. right to left-
1. stuff from the mine
2. various kinds of turf
3 sticks (green)
4 rocks (blue/silver)
5 Crafted items -like glass (blue/gold)
At an angle on far left
1.Iron
2. pebble sand and dug up stuff (Red chest)
3. can't remember
4. Gold
Anyway, you get the general idea.
Then I have one chest out in the fields, by the Raspberry/Blueberry/Gooseberry bushes, so I can store the ingredients for Berry Salad + cooked Berry Salads.
Oh, yeah - and I stuck the food ingredients that you purchase from Remy & the Meat shop, in a refrigerator in my Kitchen room. :D
(except for the most common things, that you need lots of for crafting recipes - like wood, coal, pebbles, clay, etc - I only keep one stack of most stuff.)
For example, green chests contain green plants, red chests contain red fruits and so on.
This system has also been applied to gems.
Unfortunately, there are are no black or purple chests at this time, so I had to use just plain chests for amythyst and onyx until more colors are implemented.
In one of the patches, they made it so many (but not all) furniture items that *should* hold things, can. They're only the size of small chests, though. But for my fridge full of butter, eggs, and meat, that's enough. :D
You should think about what you want to do with the house linked storage, it is the most versatile since you can place the vintage chest anywhere to access it. If they are going to keep expanding different areas it might be good to have some common storage in the house too, since you can go inside even in the new area, but I don't like going through too many transitions to store/retrieve.
For now I think I will just store each regions items near the house.
I use my fridges for those items also..lol I mean come on..where else should ya store milk, cheese , eggs, etc?? :D
Would be nice if they had more storage capacity then a small chest.
Buy a few large tables of your color choice.
Colour code chests.
Ie: yellow = crops or flowers
You can drop an item on the ground, edit decor, and place the item on the table. This can be used as generic labelling system.
Ie: coal, wood, gem, carrot, ect
Only use the "auto sort" in each chest.
This lets you purposefully place and keep chests how you want.
Then, if you still have, for example, a ruby unsorted, place in chest.
I know people will say to keep chests where you farm, but this will get out of hand fast.
And once you're past 2-3 chests, re-sorting and moving will be a fricking hassle.
Plus, a trip to your house will refill your energy. So it ain't all bad for a few seconds here and there.
Adding rooms is done from the "elevator" in your house entrance to the left once inside. You can rename rooms and add rooms
