Ex:
On the right side of the entrance, near the stove, I have Fish, Fruits/Spices, Vegetables (this is my main stash box).
On the left side of the entrance I have Flowers (valley) and Other Stuff (right now, easter eggs and roses)
Along the right side I have Rocks&Minerals, Processed Materials, Gems, and Wood.
On the back wall, it's stuff from the Isle: Plants, Food, Rocks&Minerals, and Timebending stuff.
Each one is a single large chest.
Oh, and in another room, where I built a modern kitchen, the refrigerator holds a couple stacks each of all of Remy's purchased ingredients. And now Meat.
And when I switched to eating just Berry Salads, I put a large chest out in the world right next to my berry bushes. I kept harvesting berries until I had two complete rows of each kind. Now with the auto-cooker, that's turning into a box filled with 50-stacks of Berry Salad (up to ~450 so far)
tl;dr - space and time spent organizing stuff, is also a "cost". I'd rather spend materials on large chests to reduce my costs in space & time. /shrug
Of course, I don't keep more than one stack of most items. Only the most commonly used ones or ones that are used in bulk (like wood, stones, clay, etc)
I could see if you have only played a short time, it would be better to build more small chests to improve organization rather then pile everything into one big chest. I really like the big chests because I can put a lot of themed items in just one location. I have one just for all the crafted items like bricks, iron, twine, cloth, etc. I threw a few other items in that one just because there is so much room.
In a few cases, it makes sense to use one of your small chests- the various kind of sod comes to mind as an example. You just never need much of it to begin with so no need to stockpile a ton of it.
Starting out with small chests is fine but once you have a lot of resources from grinding like a mad man, you're going to need bigger chests.
If you play the game long enough, you will inevitably find your resource gathering expertise requires significant amounts of storage.
And one large chest is much better then several smaller ones, in terms of space saved.
Large being capacity, not physical size.
The only difference being the external visuals.
It really depends.
I have enough stuff saved up that I can generally do a Star Path easily so I don't care to just get resources just to hoard. Most of my chests are therefore the smallest ones, some are even furnishings I bought and duped with Scrooge's Store, like the wardrobes.
