Fishing is the closest thing to a mini-game, but everything else in this game, including farming, is even less complex than your average cozy game like Stardew Valley.
It's more like a sandbox game which also has some quests.
So you can do the activities either for fun or to build points and things, or as part of occasional quests. The game has a bit of everything in it.
You will need to figure out the recipes and obtain the ingredients. It all gets cooked in a vat of boiling water. Even the salad.
You can make of those what you will and make up your own role plays. It isn't like The Sims where there are constant arcs and tracks to follow. There are some quests but not always.
Once the quests are done, most people just mine and farm or fish or something like that, to accrue in-game money, and points.
Then there is a shop now with things you can buy for real money. Those aren't necessary to play.
The collecting is linked to milestones to earn dreamlight. The quests often provide some new skills or improvement of your tools that you use to collect.
Overall, the disney vibe, the really great musical scores, and the pretty casual game play works well for some folks. If you are on the fence about buying it wait and it should become free to play by December 2023,
Most of what you pay is really buying the ingame currency and you get a couple of limited edition items for your trouble. I was skeptical I would like the game when I bought it....400+ hours later still enjoying it.
