I have never been good at fishing minigames, so there is a high rate of failure.
I'm either one second too fast or too slow, always getting a red circle of failure.
They seriously need to increase that window of opportunity.
I know what movie inspired this minigame and now I am really resentful of a Goofy Movie.
Because if it had not existed, then neither would this aprocryphal minigame.
Have you tried closing your eyes and just listening to the sounds? That helped me in another game where fishing was hard for me. You click at the first boink and then the tonk, tonk sounds come pretty regularly.
Then I had the boot within an hour of fishing.
Feels like that should have been documented in the mission text.
A lot of times I just stop watching the circle and watch my character. They lurch a little every time the circles meet. Hit the button as soon as you see this jerk or lunge.
For those that are struggling fishing becomes easier when you know the pattern and practice a little. When the shrinking ring enters the center ring it will turn green. The first time you need to tap once to start the cycle and then tap again when the inner ring turns green, but each cycle after that you just need to tap the key once when the inner ring turns green. Don't try to anticipate it.
Fishing takes a lot of energy so bringing a few cooked meals with you is helpful. Having a fishing buddy (mine is Goofy) is also helpful.
Seaweed tip (spoilers):
If you need to farm seaweed cast outside of any ring into open water. Sometimes you'll get fish but often you'll get seaweed. This is helpful for crafting and feeding sea turtles.
