Pretty much.
You may want to try a new game after adjusting some settings.
I honestly have no idea if there's any way to get an army to match the Baron if he's allowed to be agressive.
i dont see how thats entirely fair i was playing a challenge run just a run of the mill game thats really strange to me
What scenario were you playing? "Rise to Prosperity" or "Restoring the Peace" or "On the Edge".

And what difficulty? Note: There is no 'normal' difficulty. There is only Relaxing, Default, and Challenging.
i was playing default and restoring the peace

unsure on mountain map but you can offer to pay for peace, it bugs out and he accepts, if you want to keep your town that is.

I just had a similar experience against the baron. In fact it was my first defeat since the game was introduced. What caused it was not the lack of available or affordable mercenaries which puts the player at an extreme disadvantage, but the malfunctioning storage, granary and market function. Goods or simply not brought to the market and as a result there is hardly any growth.
I am not sure if there are bugs at play, as usual. Inspecting the files also always gives a negative result.
Until there changes something in the faulty mechanisms, I refuse to play the game anymore.
In fact I have uninstalled it.
The baron will usually attack with just 162 men of his own. 1 retinue, 2 sets of footmen, 1 set of archers and 1 band of brigands.

However, if mercenaries are still available for hiring the moment that the baron goes to war with you, he will buy them all up and boost his numbers with them. So by the time you challenge him to open battle, you should hire them all yourself (or at least the good ones) BEFORE challenging him.

More on that topic in my detailed guide:

Why dont you use the mercenaries you can hire? The first 5 years are the most difficult, if you have your own full equiped army it is quite easy to defeat him. But if you think you will be defeated its always usefull to ask for peace, i had never the situation he has not agreed.

Hire them with what? The king who does nothing to protect me from bandits or the Baron steals so much money from me that I can't afford mercenaries.
i cant hire any mercenaries there are none to hire

I could face baron in huge maps with settings that make him take all lands before mine, but in high peals where we only have 4 territory, that really looks impossible.

Like said above, the first 5 years are the hardest, and because of the settings, i dn't even had starting weapons, you need familys, but no one comes until you have fullfilled mostly of the needs, and you need familys to fulfil then, what leave you in a paradox that require tons of micro to solve.

Once you actually have enough familys to do the basic (1 at granary/1 at workshop/ 1 tailor/ 1 on food/ 1 on log pit/ 1 on sawpit), is the time when you can get 1 for trade to make money. I know i am newbie, but i was like at 200 days from the raiders attack. I instantly started to make shields and spears, usually the first atack hit the baron army, but just for safety i was already trying to get army, and for my suprise, before the raiders even come, baron came himself. How the hell is someone suposed to beat that army is less then 3 years?

its just hard for me because i defeated the first wave of raiders then hildebolts army came through no mercs or anything kinda makes me feel like im wasting my time lol i love the game but all in all i think the battling needs to be a bit more balanced

Uhm... hire them with the treasury money from raiding bandit camps in the beginning of the game, and later with the treasury money accumulated by taxing your healthy economy that you had the first 5 ingame years to build before the first king's tax ever was raised.

What's weird for me too is that I had plenty of money in the treasury and when I try to hire mercenaries, it says treasure funds insufficient... -_- :praisesun:

This is making me not want to play. I just finally warded off some raiders and homeboy pulls up with a massive army. Way over-tuned for a normal mode.

Seriously, guys... it took me a whole week to write this guide for you... and almost a year of playtesting the game to accumulate the info in there... so please at least read it before wallowing in desparation because of one instance of losing against the baron. Please, at least take a look... I know it's a lot of reading, but I promise, everything that you experienced is explained in there... and also how to prevent it and win. Please give it a try...
