Only a single Trails game has been released since 2018 (not counting console re-releases). We got Cold Steel 3 this year on PC... which was released in 2017 in Japan.
Ys has every game up-to-date.
Meanwhile Trails is still lacking Zero (2010) and Azure (2011), which came out a decade ago (both just got a "remaster" with some retcons this year in Japan for PS4) and are the middle half of an on-going story that requires fans to utilize fan-translations.
Hence my comment.
These two are required for the Trails game announced and being developed in Japan right now, as that game is said to load saves from these games.
The Trails game we're getting on PC next year: Cold Steel 4, came out in Japan in 2018. So again, a 3 year delay.
Aren't we still missing Ys V though?
Why not both? Im personally looking forward to both Ys IX and Cold Steel 4.
I do agree with that. I dunno why Falcom didnt go with that option.
XSEED was far ahead in terms of porting ability (thanks to them hiring Durande), so we also wouldnt have had the Ys VIII 2-3 release issues if they had done the localisation for that game.
Since for the Ys games translation time wouldnt be an issue (they have far less dialogue), it would have made sense if XSEED did the Ys games at minimal.
Remember that at the time NISA took over, the first thing they did was the disaster called Ys VIII's Steam release(s)
Now with Cold Steel 3 being a very good port they gained back some good will, but that doesnt mean all is forgiven yet. We still have to see if they can keep it up after all.
There are multiple reasons why Falcom decided to start licensing their games to NISA, and many of the people at XSEED who were Falcom fans have left since then. If anybody other than NISA gets a Falcom game in the foreseeable future, it won't be XSEED, and they'll have to both outbid NISA and convince Falcom to take a risk on an unknown partnership, so it's not likely.
I somehow doubt that Ys IX is as text heavy. There's a fair amount of text in Ys games these days but there's still a very large difference between Ys VIII and Trails games, so I do not see Ys IX bridging that gap just yet.
No, the majority of reviews are from the botched launches. IE: multiple. Yes Ys VIII was fixed, but by the time it was it is not like it impacted sales anymore. They cant undo that damage done.
If Ys VIII has a positive rating at all, its to the credit of the game itself despite NISA screwing it over several ways sideways.
