FPS is only low in this game

For some reason, that I cannot figure out, my fps is incredibly low in this game even though my gpu and cpu usage is around only 50%. I play ark also and can run that on all epic settings (even though it max out my gpu). If anyone has any suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. Thanks.

What are your system specs?
If you have a laptop, have you made sure the laptop is using the dedicated videocard and not an integrated videochip to run this game?

I have a 3060 ti for gpu and AMD Ryzen 5 3600X for cpu. I would think that they would be maxed out if they were insufficient, but I am still pretty ignorant on computer stuff and things.

If not, what is the FPS limit set to?

Fyi, you can set an FPS limit for all games in Nvidia control panel. You should set it to match your monitor to limit "extra" work from your GPU. Then just make sure any FPS limit setting in games is off or higher then your Nvidia limit.

If you use gsync, you should disable vsync.

I tried it with both vsync on and off, and they were about the same. my limit is set to the default 144hz which is what my monitor is. The FPS limit for all games tip is actually super helpful for the other games I play.

Have you fired changing quality settings to see if that has an impact?

Have you tried switching between fullscreen and borderless window?

If you find an improvement with one of these setting changes, you may want to submit a bug report.

Do you have the latest drivers? You can also try verifying game file integrity.

Sup! This indeed sounds weird, it looks like the game has some external limit enforced. You can enable the fps counter in the settings, does it stay at some rigid level like 30 or 60?

It does not, it is fairly high if it is paused and when i am not near my settlement, but when i resume the game it tends to dip drastically by 20 or 30. I've tried my best to work with the settings and see what i might be able to do, but even at the lowest setting I'm still only around 100 fps. It is probably user error, i just don't know where I went wrong.

A 3600X does not have an iGPU, so that throws that theory out of the window.

Could you do us a favor and do the following:

1. Open the Steam Client, select Help in the top menu, then System Information. Copy all content into this thread.
2. Go to userbenchmark.com and use the Free Download for their basic benchmarking tool and let it run while your system is idle. Then link the results in this thread.


Something really is off and you shouldn't get any performance issues in this game.

I have the same problem when my settlement gets to "big".

I play in 1920x1080 vsync 75hz locked until lategame. After some time it drop below 75fps for some reason but cpu and gpu usage is never above 50%...

@devs pls have a look what can cause this issue, maybe draw call overhead?

I had 144fps at the start of a new run on Scarlet Forest then it slowly throughout the game fell to 75 even lower at times. My specs are r5 5600 + 6700xt... and yea the utilisation was going around 30 to 50%. I too am curious to find out why this is happening.

Hey! Indeed, as the settlement grows and there are more and more objects on the map, it is likely to affect the performance. It depends on various factors, such as a selected biome (Scarlet Forest can be a bit more demanding than other biomes), the number of animated objects, etc.
