Everyone wants that for every game. The problem is that it's incredibly taxing on performance; the lock to zooming further out is there to ensure that frame rates don't drop too low on any PC within the specs requirement. Further improvements on game optimisation before release might lead to a little more zooming out, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

just need a little patience, mods will fix these things as always.

Sounds to me like a poor people who can't afford a descent rig problem.

Shall we all just play pixel games because thats what most people can run?

I'm telling you the reality of the situation, and what the devs themselves have said. Do with that information what you like; it's not going to change what happens. But if you're going to start throwing insults out, I'd recommend that you don't make both a grammatical and a spelling mistake in the same sentence: that would make you look stupid as well as rude.

Just trying the game for a second time and I find the view distance so frustrating. I'm sorry but the 'it's too taxing on performance' argument is bull - devs get to decide how much graphical fidelity the game has and have chosen to favour fancy demanding graphics in a small viewport over the ability to see more of the map - it's only a performance hit if designed that way. Compare it to something like Timberborn, where I can see a huge part of the map and yet it runs beautifully at 144fps (vsynced) at ultra and still only around 70% GPU usage on my 7800 XT. Also, I have a pretty decent rig, so I'm sure it can hangle a bigger zoom. And if not, I can lower graphics settings, or change resolution, or use upscaling - i.e. I get to balance graphical quality over QOL.

Well since this thread is active: I agree, I'd like to be able to zoom more. If performance is the issue, well, there's a lot of things that can impact performance and that's why people can toggle settings on/off or set them on a scale.

I'd really like to be able to zoom far enough to see about 1/2 or more of the full map at once, ideally the whole thing.

I just wrote the same request and found this thread.

Allow us to zoom out much farther or see an overview of my settlement (during normal play, building a settlement after embarking).

When the settlement spans many screens it's difficult to navigate across the disparate sections.

Camera is too close
Hi. I just got the game and I'm playing on a 4K 43" BFG Display. I dialed down the UI size but when I zoom out the camera, the hearth is the size of my palm. Is there a reason why the game has such a short max camera distance?

performance. there's a mod somewhere that let's you mess with max camera distance.

And also the maps/settlements aren't really that big, at least early on. It'd be nice to have an overview of the entire city but it's not necessary.

Wow this is awesome! I hadn't played in a while and I knew I liked something better. Zoom distance is always a huge deal for me in games like this. I can't quite put my finger on what all changed but I definitely find the game a lot more polished now.

Read the text. The game allows you to zoom out much further than it used to
