Restore Previous Cloud Save?
Hi all! It seems something weird happened when syncing cloud saves between my laptop and my Steam Deck. I played a settlement on my Steam Deck yesterday morning, then had a long session on my laptop where I played multiple settlements and reforged the lead seal for the first time. This morning when I booted the game on my laptop, it seems like my save had reverted to where it was before I played on my Steam Deck yesterday morning.

I feel like my save data from after reforging the lead seal must be on the cloud or somewhere. I'm wondering if it's possible to look through old saves and restore them so I don't have to repeat all that work. I'm afraid of messing with files in .../AppData/LocalLow/Eremite Games/Against the Storm in case I end up deleting my entire profile.

Please let me know if you can help! I adore the game so if I have to repeat my progress, so be it haha

Hey! I'm afraid that Steam Cloud doesn't keep multiple versions of the save files, but only the latest ones. The game creates a couple of backups in case there are any errors with the newest one, but if Steam Cloud downloaded old saves, it most likely also downloaded old backups. Anyway, you may check if there are any files there with a timestamp matching the time when you finished playing before the files were overwritten by the cloud. The game saves folder is located here:
%userprofile%\appdata\locallow\Eremite Games
If there are files that you think might be the correct ones, you may try to load them (or send them to us and we'll help check it) by renaming them and removing the "_Backup" suffix (e.g. "WorldSave_Backup" to "WorldSave"). However, before making any changes to your save files, please create a backup copy of the entire folder.

If you are unable to restore the files that were overwritten, you may also message us at support@eremitegames.freshdesk.com and we'll manually add the progress that is missing. We'll do our best to reply shortly, but the response time may vary depending on various factors.

I have encountered the same issue three times now :( and each time I lose an entire day's game :(
It seems that this problem occurs consistently at midnight, as it rolls back to the first save file from the previous day. I have checked both the cloud saves and the local AppData files, but they have all been overwritten and cannot be recovered.

I have logged into Steam on 2 computers simultaneously, and occasionally I receive prompts about conflicting saves, but I have never experienced this overwriting issue before.

If you try to alternate between playing the game on more than one device and you have cloud saves turned on then you need to make absolutely sure you shut off the game and give Steam time to upload the cloud data before you launch the game on another device. Whichever machine updates the cloud last is the one that whose data will be restored when to any other machine when you launch the game on Steam.

Powering off your laptop or desktop, putting it to sleep, or hibernating it without actually shutting down the game or without waiting for Steam to sync the cloud data will leave updating the cloud until next time you turn the machine back on and actually shut down the game and Steam has a chance to upload the data and when that happens it will update the cloud and overwrite anything that you did since then on another machine.

You can tell if the game has finished syncing the cloud data after you shut down the game by clicking Library in the Steam client, then selecting the game from the list. Right next to the Play button it says the cloud data status. You need to make sure that is up-to-date and the game is not st;ll running before you launch the game on another device. If you ever run the game twice at the same time on two devices both will start with the same data and whichever one ends up shutting down last will be the one that persists. Everything you did on the other machine will be lost.

Yeah, of course, I do it this way
* I will not run the game on multi device at once
* After finishing the game, I always make sure the game save was synced
** I switching to a different game in library, it'll trigger sync
** try launching the game, also trigger sync

BTW: In the situation you mentioned, Steam will prompt a conflict confirm dialog, and ask me to choose local or remote files

Despite following all of the above steps, my game save still gets overwritten. I have been playing games on 2 computers for a long time, and only this game has been overwritten multiple times.

If it always happens at midnight it definitely could be some kind of bug in the way that the game or Steam compares time stamps on the cloud data. Perhaps the code uses 12 hour times and it doesn't realize that 1 AM comes after 12 AM because it is just comparing the number of the hour. If you are on using a 24 hour clock then you count starting at 0 and go through 23 so you can just compare the number of the hour, but if you use a 12 hour time clock then you start counting at 12, then 1 through 11. 12 is numerically greater than 1, but the time 12 AM comes before the time 1 AM.

Hey John, first of all - I'm sorry it keeps happening to you 😦 losing progress is literally the worst kind of malfunction that can happen in gaming.

Unfortunetlly, if anything happens to the save files between the sessions, I'm afraid we won't be of much help here. Cloud saves are managed entirely by Steam and all the files are prepared for the game in a certain location, prior to game launching. Once the game is closed, there is nothing we can do to influence the files on the drive, as the game code is just not running.

That being said, I've encountered similar issues in other games while playing on Steamdeck - just recently I've lost my entire progress in Peglin :(. If you have a reliable way to reproduce it, I'm pretty sure the Steam support will be more than happy to review it and fix the problems for millions of players worldwide.

is there anyway to recover a previous save cloud state after doing all this? or is it totally lost at this point?
