Restricted Foods
From what I understand, I should be able to prevent my villagers from eating foods by unchecking the box in the consumption tab, correct?
I am aware that there is a modifier which prevents you from being able to do this.
However, I am playing on a map without that modifier and my villagers are eating restricted foods. I double-checked and confirmed that it was not being used as an ingredient in a recipe unawares.
There is also a wealth of available foods, so there would be no reason for that to be used as a last resort - though I'm unsure if that is or should be a thing.

Any reason why this would be happening? It did mess up some of my planning.

how did you check that? if you looked at species' needs right after you banned consumption of some food, you wouldn't see any effect right away. it takes till the next break for each villager for the restriction to kick in

Go to the trends panel and look up the food item that's gone missing. Hover across the peaks and troughs to see what caused it to go up/down.

By your description though, I'd guess it was a glade event that destroys food, like a Blood Flower.

I'm pretty sure this is what happened. I hadn't accounted for the delay following the direction.
