harpies and foxes are by far the strongest species cause they generate the most resolve. then dinos ≈ frogs ≈ humans. beavers are by far the worst in most respects. their niche simply doesn't come into play in regular settlements
ig the minor exceptions would be
1. coral forest foxes - you get dew bars for their housing from trees
2. beavers are better in sealed forest once you unlock their starting ability - let's you up the standing earlier
However... I do disagree with the post of the poster above me... I like beavers a LOT for the fact they heavily specialise into industry which allows you to trade off resolve for a supercharged industry that makes the OTHER 2 species access their resolve faster. Foxes are likewise lower on my list because their perk of exploration not only ups hostility but eventually you're explored-out, so to speak whereas the beavers keep their bonus all throughout the playthrough
The +5 resolve/10% double chance is relevant extremely rarely outside of maybe the highest difficulties.
or is this really so much balanced that every biome has resources for every species?
species' stat profile and needs distribution is infinitely more impactful than biomes' node distribution and effects
Biome does a matter, it offers most common ressources like trees and which complex food and luxury will be easy to produce in the early phase. So the species willn't left easy during the storm.
You can check for more about biomes:

The synergies mentioned above are correct. I'd add that beavers in Coral are good because of their crit chance on woodcutting, good in Ashen Thicket because they like mining, and worse in Marshlands because they don't have a gathering camp. Sealed Forest favors humans and beavers because the rules are so different. Foxes like Scarlet Orchard on paper but doesn't always matter.
Having said that, if I have the choice I want exactly 1 human for my entire settlement, because stinky human is good for exactly two things: (1) being racist against to help my harpies riding out the storm, and (2) just in case I need to guard against too much impatience If I'm playing on Land of Greed / Sparkdew Crystal/ Seal Forest.
