the higher the difficulty the more seals you get. You can also manuever around this by selecting a path that has multiple "malus" tiles near your settlement.
Like Bandit camp(no trade)->the worst
All glades are forbidden glades etc.

Completing a settlement that has a malus tile next to it gives you "queen's reward". You can select from 3 options the third is extra shards. 5-7.
You can also make a settlement with multiple malus tiles next to it. I saw 3 as most so far. Then you get a reward for each.

Another way to gain more shards is to finish your settlements quicker, the less years you need, the more settlements you make, the more shards you get. But I would recommend getting some World negative modifiers and/or World events, they can give shard too, or just bonuses for future runs that will help you indirectly to get more shards.

I made it in the prestige 2 game, but out of curiosity I continued and I was hitting something like -20/-30 resolve during the end of the season * yikes *

Not sure I could have survived another season.

It was in the Scarlet Orchard biome with archeological skeletons to unearth.

Do remember that losing people doesn't actually lose you the game, running out of impatience does. Losing people generates impatience, but so long as you are generating reputation too, you'll be fine. Less people means less hostility, and more impatience means less hostility, so often losing a few people might stabilise your town.

Still better not to lose people if you can avoid it, but it's not an automatic game ending spiral.

There is also a rare scenario, when you will lose a game after loosing ALL your folks. But that is rare (I think).

Do you find that it is worth restoring the archeological skeletons?

It takes I think 3 events to restore them and get the resolve but each step is like 3-4 mins …

Cant say no to some reputation and buffs from the fossil.
Especially on higher prestige.
