Because a couple of the Seal quests are trade-related, it's generally a good idea to invest heavily into trade so you level up your standing with trade partners and can often buy your way through food or fuel after ~year 3.
I've never seen the same plague 2 years in a row so I can't comment on that.
You can 'unbuild' the pointers for some free resources every time you find one.
Oil carried me through my first run, see marrow is useful if you don't find it. This isn't a map to use 0-star planks or jerky or go too crazy with rainwater, due to the tree mechanics.
If you're in need of fuel and don't have like mining options, highlight the weird patches of big ugly trees for your woodcutters. They count as 10 for resources but only 1 for hostility gain.
You can get a trickle of meat and marrow like this too. Not enough to feed people (or your fire, at least consistently), but it helps.
Try to get to the seal as fast as you can, at least insomuch as glade/felled tree hostility won't mess you up. It might be awhile before you can fix it, but at least plagues are considerably easier to prepare for when you can see them coming. Besides, you'll have needed to go that direction regardless.
I don't remember what all exists there, but I do remember having enough fertile land to help.
Focus on making your settlement more powerful rather than pursuing goals for their own sake, at least early-midgame. The "low fruit" for fixing the seal is usually some mix of trade power, rainpunk and resolve. You can generally get all of those at once by thriving.
Most important if you don't do this: If it's just gold, don't be ashamed to play it below P20. Just do it on plain 'ole Viceroy if you have to. Sealed is mean.
People can say what they want but players that play prestige and manage to win at p20 are the vast minority so don't say you suck at the game just because you don't play it perfectly.
Edit: Yup, just checked. 1.7% of the players actually cleared P20 lol
Plague that ask you to open dangerous/forbidden glades+lower resolve if you open glade during storm is a nasty combo.
