herb garden vs. small farm
Probably a dumb question but... if I have a small farm next to a field, and then build an herb garden in the same area, will the herb garden use the same field as the farm, so that both buildings harvest together? Or does the herb garden need its own separate field to avoid conflict?

I think each will plant their own crops in random selected field with 1st come 1st serve basis.
Then when harvesting, each only harvest their own crop.
So small farm will only harvest vegetable and grain

Thanks for the help. So if there's 12 squares in the field, and all 12 squares are being used by the small farm, then planting an herb harden next to it will do nothing... because the squares are already used? Is that what you mean by 'first come first served'?

They will both harvest every crop in reach regardless of whether it's 'theirs'. They will fight for space during drizzle planting, but if you restore a hallowed herb garden in a glade you can build a spare small farm to allow two extra workers to help harvest. They'll still collect the 9-stacks that the hallowed herb garden planted and generally be just as good at harvesting.

OK, thanks for the help. I haven't found a "hallowed herb harden" yet.

The tiles is just tiles.
It doesn't belongs to anyone.
It will temporary belongs to a building who ALREADY planted a crop until harvested, then free up again.
You assuming the building will claim the fertile tiles like a territory

All I'm wondering about is whether or not two different buildings (farm, herb garden) can plant crops in the same field at the same time. I take it with "1st come 1st serve" the answer is 'no'. So thanks for your help!

They can. It is actually a good idea when you have 15 or 18 plots of soil and no upgrades or cornerstones that increase the speed of harvesting.
What will happen on small plots (~12 fields) is this: The workers from both the farm and the herb garden will start planting on some of the fields. Around 2/3 of drizzle there will be no more soil to be planted on and the workers will stop working. At the start of clearance both buildings' workers will start harvesting the planted goods.

Yes you can plant on the same field. You will not get full output from those buildings but you will probably harvest everything that was planted instead of only 50-70% (which happens when you put one farm near a large field).

I hope this clears it up, if not, feel free to ask more questions!

Thanks so much for this further information! I perhaps have just one more question. Your scenario seems to presuppose that two buildings (farm, herb garden) are *simultaneously* planting on a hitherto *unused* field. What you say makes perfect sense.

But what if the farm came first, and the whole field was planted by the farm, and then the herb garden was built? How would that affect things? More specifically, (i) would the herb garden be ignored because the farm already planted the field, or (ii) would the next rotation of planting and harvesting be split 50%/50% between the two buildings now that an additional building is there, or (iii) would some other algorithm be implemented by the game?

Thanks for any help.

If farm planted whole field, then there will be nothing left for herb garden this year. On the next year they would approximately split the fields 50/50, though it is possible for one of the buildings to actually plant more than the other one, this would mostly depend on workers, their breaks and pathing.

OK, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for your help!
