This particular forest mystery is a nasty one, but it's also a difficulty cost 2 mystery so you don't have a lot of budget left for other horrible forest mysteries.
It isn't. There are a few such storm penalites that only take effect when the storm begins.
The blood flower didn't used to work that way. I tried digging the fields up before the start of the storm and then building fields near the end of the storm. This worked the first time but on the second occasion the blood flower spawned quite quickly, suggesting the timer didn't reset in a simple manner.
The sacrifice suggestion is drop hostility below but leave the fields, then let hostility rise again immediately to reset the timer.
Destroying the fields still leaves the event up, and ostensibly checking for when it can trigger.
Almost every person I have seen play this game complains about the blood flower sapping a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of their food, and it's REALLY bad if you get one early on too.
What do you mean "zero control"? You can destroy the bloodflowers, and it is not like bloodflowers are the only glade event that can end your run. A drainage mole can be even more devastating, because it requires a ton of resources. After all, if you don't want to take risks, you can only open small glades.
