What do reserve embarkation points do?

The game doesn't explain it well enough and I don't want to **** around and find out.
I would rather ask you guys.

Are the reserve embarkation points valid for the whole cycle, or is it that if you use them you lose them? Or is it that you lose them after your next settlement regardless so you there is no point in saving some/all of them for a later settlement?

Normal embarkation points are wasted if you dont use them.
Reserve points can be carried to the next game if you dont use them. You can even save up a large amount of them for more difficult future games if you like.
