Ore and coal veins spawn
Mines have access to the veins that are directly below the mine buildings, which is 3x3 square. Yet clusters of veins often spawn in a way that prevents harvesting them with a single mine. For example, a glade may have 3 veins of coal in it, but they are spread across 4 tiles in one of the map grid dimensions, so only two of them can be covered by a single mine.

I'm curious, is it intentional part of the design? Is it supposed to make the player to make a decision whenever to build another mine to get the remaining vein?

Or is it just an artifact of the map generation?

I think there's few things about mines and coal bugged. For example, after you mined the coal, it still stays on the map even depleted and when you try to build a new mine elsewhere the game still points to the exhausted coal.

The only way to make the exhausted coal disappear i found so far was to build a road over it.

The ore and coal deposits disappear when exhausted, but you need to upgrade the mine twice to actually exhaust them.

Upgrade a mine? I missed tat one I guess...

Mines can be upgraded 2 times. Every time you choose from 3 possible upgrades. When you deplete the vein (after upgrading mine twice) the vein will disappear.

Good to know mines can be upgraded. 250 hours in and I never knew that.

OK, I started this discussion to make sure I'm not missing some hidden value in the way the deposits are spawning, before I make a suggestion to fix it. Since this discussion sunk really fast, I decided to make the suggestion anyway: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1336490/discussions/3/3792632416036229722/

I think it sunk fast as many players don't use mines a great deal. Maximising mines isn't a priority. It's rare that mines get fully exhausted after they are fully upgraded. I'd count my games lost due to mining problems as zero.

Your solution isn't doing much other than making the game work according to your expectations, expectations other players might not share. Does the game need this change?

See above: people care about deposits not disappearing :)
Actually the feature that made the exhausted deposits disappear was suggested by players.

That's actually strange people don't use mines. I mean, copper and coal are close to the best resources in the game.

I'd rather be out of copper and coal than out of food.

How common is this issue really? I've never seen ore deposits spread out in a way that I couldn't cover with a single mine, and I do chop down trees in the area to check for more. I've also only fully depleted twice I think.

I have encountered copper/coal spread like this a few times. And yeah, it bugs me a little.
Samseng Yik Mar 9, 2023 @ 1:47am
In my experience, they always spread like this.
Clean cover all vein with 1 mine is RARE, mostly due to it spawn only 1 node or 2.
Narandia Mar 9, 2023 @ 5:46am
single deposits mostly seem to spawn in a 3x3 pattern, exceptions I've seen have mostly been coal and copper mixes in the marshlands, presumably 2 seperate clusters being generated next to eachother.

Not that missing out on one node out of 4+ is much of a problem in the long run.

Actually i think it's a good question. What I'm bothered with, is that the mine is not moveable. So when the coal/copper veins are depleted, i have to destroy the mine, since the veins do not respawn. Or did I miss something? In some biomes you won't get the resources back after destroying it.
Other thing indeed, is that the mine does not cover all the veins, if there are 4 veins. And what's this thing about upgrading a mine??

I never had a coal/copper vein spread out so much that the whole mine building would not cover it.
Yes, once all the materials mined out, you have to destroy the mine itself, which removes the building and refounds the innitial cost (meaning that you will be refunded the full price of the building, but not the two upgrade if you upgrade the mine) And yes, there is a map modifier which disable the demolish material returns, but that is just one case where you dont get your stuff back.

And if you click on your mine, there is a 2nd tab right on top. If you click on it you can upgrade the mine. There is two level and 3 options in each level. You can only choose one option in each level. 3 upgrade, 3 different bonus you can get. And once again, you will NOT get back your materials which you decide to spend on the upgrade itself.
