No resin
where do you get resin from when chopping trees doesn't yield anything and traders don't have any?

There is a farm building you unlock with Level8. Additionally, some biome modificators can give you resin as a collection bonus.
But those aren't available to you in the demo.

Keep in mind that many recipes and glade events do accept substitutes for resin.

Not all trees yield resin. It depends on the biome.

by this token, new starting zone asking for resin in a biome you can't obtain it seems a bit messed up.

You can always check what it asks for and it'll probably take stuff other than resin, too. Took me a bit to realize that, heheh.
