Guess it was a bug.
Just make a walk-in freezer using shelves and an air conditioner set to its coldest temp (I actually set it a bit higher to avoid the "frigid temperature" unhappiness when somebody goes to grab some food...anything below freezing should be fine).
1) Space-wise, it's more efficient to put refrigerators/freezers (that are turned off) in cold rooms (what Cougarific said above) instead of storage shelves. I think the guides here mentioned that.
2) I always have 1 freezer for cooked food. This is right beside the dining table. So folks just run to it, get a meal, sit down and eat. No need to visit the freezing pantry.
3) In Saltu, I find cold rooms don't work well. It's a hot jungle and even with the best carbon cold rooms, the cook going in/out all day long to get ingredients means that AC heat pump(s) can't keep up.
Once you have enough leisure items/activities, anything above a simple dish is a waste or resources and time.

It's not a matter of 'needing it", it's just a matter of being a foodie myself, so I want my survivors to enjoy great food too.
But it is not needed, if that helps people.
I'd make sure they get enough sleep, relaxation and food. I'd make sure each idiot gets their favorite food. Quick meals in Year 1, Tasty meals in Year 2 and Chef's meals Year 3 and after.
By Year 2, they'd all be living in a nice brick house with largest rooms for everyone. No wooden cabins.
By Year 3, they'd all be decked out in full syn or carbon armor.
I just implied that for those players that struggle a bit that some things aren't needed to spend to much time on early/mid game.
