Lots of possibilities, we can only wait and see.
Right now the only thing bodies of water are good for are restricting hostile access to one (or more) side of your base - but by doing that you're handicapping the amount of resources within gathering range.
Hoping for fishing, recreation, proximity buffs (who doesn't like to fall asleep to the sound of waves lapping the shore?), water as a recipe ingredient?
What are some other things water could be used for?
There's nothing in our plans for game features or mechanics using water, but the team is aware that it's a highly requested feature.

YOu have cooked meals - basicaly almost all of them are soups. So you have much of the water needs applicability covered, but you can still add a ton of additional content and functionality with including it as a resource.
