Most likely and they do this for a reason. Firstly they want you to do new things and tell different stories. Secondly they have seen in the past that the majority just picks generic male as you said. I still remember BioWare releasing the stats for maleshep/femshep. 88% chose maleshep, the cronically online people almost had seizures.
She's also accompanied by her daughter, who has a speech impediment in the form of a lisp.

Actions you make as one character can help or hurt the other ones. Which I thought was pretty cool.
