If you treat this game as a single player game and if you are purely looking for BioWare style Star Wars story with different dialogue options, then it is definitely worth it to play and it will be one of the most satisfying games out there. You will get to play all 8 fully voiced class stories, which is arguably the best part about this game to this very day. You will also be able to play the next two story expansions Rise of the Hutt Cartel and Shadow of Revan after that, but all other expansions are behind a one month subscription. All in all you get lots of story for nothing.
However, If you are looking for the typical MMO content like dungeon runs, PvP and endgame progression, then yes everything is basically gated behind a paywall and you will not be able to do anything worthwhile or be competitive without shelling out some money to unlock stuff. If challenging group content is important to you and you are not willing to pay for it, than you should skip this game. It is also important to know that a lot of customizable things about the UI and your character are behind a paywall and everything will just take longer if you don't pay for convenience.
Star Wars Story = completely worth it as a F2P
MMO stuff = not worth it at all as a F2P
You don't need to pay for anything. f2p'ers get access to a significant amount of storyline content, this includes the base storylines, ilum and 2 DLC's (Makeb, SoR). If you play through all 8 base storylines on one alignment and do the same with another 8 on another alignment and see where the storylines go and consequences of those actions, the stories will be different.
There is literally hundreds of hours of content to go through as F2P. The flip side of the coin are the limitations, but if you don't mind an extra little grind and having to go with blue quality loot trash for armour either, or with blue quality mods in customisable gear. However it is perfectly playable all the way to level 65 and SoR.
The beauty of the F2P system is that you can play whenever you like with no obligation. no one is forcing you to play and if you are curious enough to install it and start playing, i encourage you to follow through and see what it is about with your own experience when you reach that point. You may find the game to be really great and if you want to put money into it later, you can.
UPD: forgot to mention, you can also use someone's referal link and, if you were sub once, you'll get 7 days of sub time plus bundle for all your new chars, which contains some unlocks (IIRC it's inventory module, unify colors, display titles and smth else).
You can play comfortably until level 60 which is the base game and first 2 expansions. If you want to be able to play until max level and get the next 3 expansions you need to subscribe for 1 month. After that you can cancel the subscription and the expansions and max level is permanently unlocked on your account for all your characters and any new characters you create.
Having Artifact Authorisation (account version) unlocked is recommended for people playing at max level with a free account. It let's you use the better gear.
Summary, play the 1-60 content. If you want more it'll cost roughly £20 for 1 month sub and Artifact Authorisation, one time expense. Then you're all set.
I've yet to sub, so no insight there. Right now I'd say it'd be a toss up between buying cartel coin or just subbing (you get 500 CC/mo just subbed) to get the Preferred player status in the end. The only thing I've spent CC on was increased inventory slots; dunno what to do withe the 1700 CC left over/current. Either way, worth the d/l, f2p is fun as all get out, preferred has a few perks. I do recommend getting to preferred just for convenience of the movement and spending 350CC for that one level of expanded inventory slots.
I'd recommend in your case for a one month sub, you gain all the current storylines from Ziost to Onslaught and the extra missions after this. you do gain 500cc for the month and if you got a security key added that's another 100cc. If you manage to get users to use your referral link by a passive advertising means on the swtor forum through a signature and get some clicks and subscriptions, you make a bit there as well in CC.
Just for starters though the one month would be useful in doing operations as well, plus the extra gear and currency limitations as well. You can get quite a lot done in one month, more than a few thousand CC can manage.
Just to be clear, after a single month of subscription I get all of the dlc forever, right? Or did i misunderstand?
That's correct.
If they release a new expansion in the future then you'll need to sub for 1 month again to get it. If a future expansion works the same way as the others.
As someone just looking for an mmo, its decent f2p, but worth the sub if you enjoy it. Especially since you get access to all the expansions and so much more with a sub.
thats not true, but still an amazing game!
