As for average ash of war, i'd probably go a little further and say to pick some ash of war that's (currently) absolute trash (ie. 'Darkness'). It's that middle of the road kind of path between having a useful ash of war and.... well.... not.

I think that you should think by yourself and play whatever makes you happy and of course have the proper stats for it.
Urgh but fine......ancient and Rykard rancors (magic and fire damage) will allow you to kill everything without problems, even huge groups of monsters. Use a Death Poker as weapon aaaand voila! Massive damage for everything without using a meta meme build.
That is about as generic, balanced (and kinda boring) as you can possibly get. Decent speed, decent damage resistance, decent damage, and can block things if needed.
