I forgot how terrible the input buffering is.
I love this game and am excited for the DLC... but after playing Lies of P, it's incredible how just bad the dodging and input delays are on keyboard with Elden Ring.

I can go back to Dark Souls 3 and it doesn't feel even remotely as unresponsive.

Dodge on release must really suck with keyboard, at least on controller you can just flick the button. I guess if you had one of those Wooting analog keyboards, then you could set the release to trigger really early.

You kinda get used to it after some time, but yeah, I always have to press 0.2 second earlier than in other games. It can be useful sometimes when I hold the key a bit longer to determine whether I want to run or dodge. It dodges the instant I release because I've held the key a short time, pressing much earlier than before dodging but not long enough to start running

Depending on some weapons, the recovery + dodge on release makes for some really dumb situations

Also shoutout to my character sometimes waiting for a second before even registering that I want to run lol

Yeah and it is something you adapt to, but it doesn't mean it feels good. Especially in the later game where bosses became extremely hard hitting even with 60 vigor and have long combos where dodging is crucial.

The game discourages spamming similarly to 1, 2 and 3... but has enemy types and attack patterns which encourage spamming because of said delay/input buffering Elden Ring suffers from.

It's really crap.

Oh, for sure. The great epee is an example. It makes the game feel truly unresponsive, despite being a good weapon. The recovery time with it actually makes the game feel simply broken. At least on keyboard.

I encourage everyone to see just how bad keyboard dodging feels with its delay. Even with button on release, you have to predict when an attack is coming rather then reacting to it.

The worst part is, just before playing Elden Ring, I was playing Kingdom Hearts 3 where dodge happens instantly. Suffice to say, I died quite a bit against the Tree Sentinel at the beginning before managing to kill him.

I was playing Lies of P and it's actually comical how responsive that game is compared to Elden Ring. Again, not unplayable for ER but people are deluding themselves to not see it as a problem and actually somehow worse than it was in their prior entries.

On kbm you can map space on one of the mouse buttons.

The only thing you need to release actual space if you were holding it before pressing the mouse "space" then, but it kind of become automatic rather fast if you use this setup.

Eh problem is. I'm so hard wired to space being dodge based on my experience in other souls games.. I really, truly, cannot map my brain to utilize a mouse button for dodging/running.

I'll give it a try but I can't see it working out well for me.

I know there's a mod that separates sprint and dodge as well but again, my brain is hard wired to use space for run and dodging that it's very difficult to adjust with.

It's kind of crazy how dramatically backwards From went when it came to control response time from DS3 to Elden Ring.

FPS issue.
With unlocked FPS ER and LoP are on par in terms of responsiveness.

Well unfortunately, that mod makes it impossible to play online; doesn't it?

I suppose so. Not playing online here.

Well I honestly don't know if it was much better in DS3, I used the same mouse-dodge setup there.

Although, thinking about that DS3 also had it on release, so really not sure what changed that much.

It's on release in Dark Souls 3 too but it responds quicker. Elden Ring has this weird delay even ON the release of a keyboard. For example, give it a test in game and you can see what I mean.

In Dark Souls 3, the dodge responds *on* release and not a little after on release. The game also might have better i-frames too.

On m+kb ER for me is more responsive than DS3 (I'm playing through 1st DLC rn) and as responsive as DualSense controller.
