Edit: I found elsewhere that the real effect of the blessing is MUCH more powerful than the item description tells you. Still, it's very short lasting...
Apparently it does more than that. 35% damage negation for physical damage and 34% poise for 15 seconds. I had no idea about the the damage negation part.
- 45% damage negation to ALL damage types
- Near-infinite poise
- Can be used repeatedly

Just that it means it's something that will be used in the middle of combat right before someone hits me. And in that situation why not just block with a shield?
In general Dark Souls buffs are so short lasting that I don't bother.
