Vigor is your most important stat, doesn't matter if mages are squishy in other games.
Feel like you're stuck? Explore some more. The Lands Between are vast, and especially Limgrave has a lot to offer for new players. If an area or a boss feels unbeatable, return later.
Still feeling stuck? Try to analyze how you approach a fight, there might be something you could do differently. Sometimes it's not only okay, but required to sleep a night when you can't beat something right away.
Most importantly: have a lot of fun, and don't be afraid to ask questions or call for the assistance of a sunbro!
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, Tarnished!
(might want to visit fextralife or some other wiki, to learn the heavy hitting spells of each type)
Spells are for large targets and big hp pools. (spam is win)
Carry something faster with INT infused, for small targets and pvp-invasions.
Magic build is one of the easier play-throughs, imo.
Keep your distance and 1-shot everything.
/edit
There are some 'utility' spells for other niche' cases.
(like invisible/silent... or big push projectiles)
These won't be necessary for 'normal' gameplay.
But, in a few select instances, can give you an advantage.
I guess what I'm saying is don't get discouraged if magic isn't working for you right off bat. Maybe try a hybrid melee/magic build until you get things figured out. Good luck.
After that you can find the info boxes from the tutorial again in your inventory under "info items" - last category. Other things you may want to remember will be stored there, too. Look at the tutorial infos again after playing a while.
In the game you are faced with self-guided exploration. Collect those map pieces, look at the map and decide which point of interest to explore. At least in the beginning, try to clear each smaller and larger encounter you see successfully at least once. This will teach you a lot about combat.
Make sure to try out all the different game mechanics - weapon move sets, weapon arts, spells, summons, crafting, physicks, etc. You can always decide what you want to use, what you like, what you don't like - but at least try out everything so you know what it all does. Knowledge is more than half the battle in this game.
Talk to NPCs. Don't attack them without a good reason. Talk to them again until their dialogue starts repeating.
If you come upon something you can't beat - go and explore more. There's basically two large regions you can explore and "complete" before you take on the first major story beat.
Don't get frustrated. Dying and also losing runes is part of the journey, and everyone dies a lot. Get into that "try and try again" mindset. The world is your sandbox. Filled with vipers. But still your sandbox.
As for magic - my suggestion: Do NOT look stuff up. Do NOT run and gather items at the start of the game. Try going without. Some things are very easy for spell casters, others will be hard. But if you get through yourself and some day become super powerful, that will feel much much better.
This is the first of a 3 part series that details step by step how to make a massively powerful Night Comet - Moonveil build (and use it) in Elden Ring. It is a blast to play and will get you all the way through the game and into NG+ and the DLC no problem.

I still use this build and am NG+2 doing the DLC. Is fun just nuke em till they glow. Or beat the crap out of them. :)
One suggestion. Find a guide to the Main Quest Line for Elden Ring so you don't get ahead of yourself in getting this fun gear. :)
Good Luck
Have Fun!
Lastly, do *not* neglect Vigor to focus on Int. "I don't need HP because I won't get hit" means nothing because you will indeed get hit unfortunately. An unfortunate caveat we wizards often fall into. And don't neglect melee weapons either. Don't want to be caught with your pants down and no FP left.
That's all I have for now, feel free to ask anything else. Stay strong fellow wizard!
