How to make damage resistance as high as possible?
Already figured out that heavy armor has an obvious effect, as does the dragoncrest greatshield talsiman.

What else gets damage resistance up? Anything, items, spells, equipment, whatever.

Heavy armor does almost nothing to mitigate damage.

Crab meat bro. There's a good difference in eating and not eating it.

Armor, incantations, talismans, consumables, raising some stas (eg str raises physical def) and just leveling up (every level raises all resistances a little bit) all raise damage resistance. Resistance is multiplicative, so two 10% armor pieces don't reduce damage by 20% but for 19%.

Don't argue with the "armor does nothing" conspiracy theorists. The only thing arguing with an idiot does is make you an idiot as well.

I'm only speaking from my own personal experience. Going from Raging Wolf set to Banished Knight set made a negligible difference in the amount of damage I could take. Maybe it makes a difference if you stack every bit of damage negation possible.

In my experience, increasing vigor did far more to increase my chances of survival than wearing heavy armor.

I'm not a new player. My vigor is at 60, I know exactly how to level stats. And heavy armor does matter, even if its not hugely noticable.

You can also see the exact percentage of damage negation in the stats panel with different armor sets equipped. The difference between 10% and 30% matters if you stack it with other things, hence this thread's existence.

^Probably the best of the lot for reliability.
+35% reduction and stacks with Golden Vow (which similar to Dragoncrest is nerfed in PvP but not as bad, only to 5% from PvE's 10%) or Commander's Standard weapon art which also gives 20% (but cuts healing by 20%). These two don't stack together so you have to pick if you want a the bigger reduction from Commander's Standard or to avoid the healing penalty.

Not sure if it stacks with crab yet, but try as someone else mentioned since you can buy/carry those in massive quantities.

Try endure weapon art, too (or w/e it is called in this game I forget) as I think they fixed it now so it actually works (it was bugged before). I don't think it overwrites the buffs in application (but I could be wrong so you would have to compare in menu). Endure type skill is a big deal for PvP in particular because it can really push resistances up. In DS3 it could get you to over 95% resistances for physical and here it might go even higher since there are more buffs of this type to really cut trading losses. Of course, short duration.

In an indirect way, the greatshield talisman is very helpful. You blow less stamina when you block, which means it doesn't start eating into your health as soon.

IIRC Black Flame's Protection also cuts healing by 20% (this doesnt matter for PVP though)
You're right. I completely forgot. Thanks.

Also try this page OP: https://eldenring.wiki.fextralife.com/Buffs+and+Debuffs
It has the buffs broken down by categories such as HP regen, etc.
For defense it would fall under the broader body category (no subsection, sadly). It doesn't have everything though like the endure effect so that isn't a conclusive search just a headstart.

I genuinely question whether that damage negation stat is accurate because I've pushed my damage negation all the way up to 40% and it barely made a difference in how much damage I took compared to 20-25%.

The insults are unnecessary. I'm going off of what I've experienced first hand, and what I've experienced first hand is that even stacking as much damage negation as possible seemed to make very little difference in the amount of damage I could take. But that's not what the OP is about so I'll stop hammering this point and let you get back to the actual topic of discussion.

it's my experience as well
At 50 vigor I beat the fire giant yesterday with -5% damage negation
It didn't one-shot me but could 2-shot me
I doubt I wouldn't get 2 shot by the fire giant with, say, 20% damage negation
