Xbox controller movement glitch
Checking reddit, this seems to be a problem with both xbox and PS4 controllers that has never been resolved, but I'm trying to find a fix anyway.
As of today, I have been getting frequent 'stuttering' when moving forward. Every once in a while, my character just stops, as if I wasn't pushing the thumbstick.
Clearly, it's dropping the input, but in a very specific way.

This wasn't happening before. I got about 10 hours of gameplay with no issue, then suddenly this started happening.

I've tried disabling other devices, turning off background programs, restarting, pluggin my controller in to different ports, adjusting the deadzone and various controller settings... and nothing seems to change the behavior in-game.

Has anyone else had this issue, and where you able to resolve it? According to other threads, buying a different controller is NOT a fix; it hasn't got anything to do with the mechanical parts of the controller, dirt, broken wires, broken ports or anything like that. It has got to be something to do with conflicting inputs, but I can't figure out what is doing it.

Ideas?

elden ring detects the controller through the OS. so if you have steam input enabled, the game may think there are two inputs for the controls, leading to sudden stutter, especially when you enter combat or a scripted event occurs (stamina drain). try disabling steam input for elden ring and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks, it was a good guess... but this didn't do it. Still consistently getting the 'stutter' movement. I tried disabling anything that could be conflicting with my gamepad through Device Manager, and I even tried unhooking my keyboard while playing. Still happening.

The most confounding thing is that it started today; up until now, it was working perfectly.

This one is typically done to eliminate framerate stuttering, but it might work here too: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1245620/discussions/0/3183487594852598267/

So it wasn't just me that this is happening to. My controller was working just fine before today as well

i would check the event viewer for problems, also the device manager for virtual USB devices.

I know the fix. Well, it works for me, but its a pain in the ass because everytime I restart the PC I have to undo it then redo it, but Its quick and I have it memorized so its easy for me.
I also don't even want to say it because the re's pricks out there that cause trouble.....so anyway....I'm not going to be real descriptive, you'll have to figure it out....
enable: Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings.

When enabled nothing will install so you have to disable it for driver installations.

watch this youtube vid, its called: 3 ways to stop driver updates in windows.

Good luck, I know this is super annoying.

I also recaliberated my controller using its own recalibration built in utility.....So if your controller has its own recalibration ability, you can look it up on your controllers website, you should use it. Then using that fix (I said previously) will prevent any changes from being made.

Also, when you calibrate your controller it helps to do it fast, don't hold the stick until it acts proper. Just move the sticks quick so hopefully it will adjust the controller in a more realtime fashion.

That's a bit ... opaque. You could be talking about anything that updates. Thanks for the response, though. I figured that something had updated and f*cked it up, now I just have to figure out what exactly

Well it worked for me. I wrote what to do, or at least what worked for me.

When you push forward but it doesn't go all the way forward so you don't run but do a jog run and then the controller seems to just shut off for split seconds in the worst situations.
but worst of all its noticable but barely, its noticable enough you know something's not right, like a shadow ban.

-that's the problem I fixed for myself.

If my mouse or keyboard activates it can mess things up, I usually flip the off switch on my mouse to prevent it from detecting any movement.
