You can make it a main weapon for a playthru but I'd recommend also having other weapons for different circumstances.
But because I’m not a youtuber I will drop this random video.

After finishing the game about 10 times I’m convinced that this class of weapons is the best in the game for pve and top tier for pvp.
Because of being able to block and attack at the same time it’s OP easy mode for pve.
Mogh’s Trident has good weapon art but for everything else I think the spear is a better weapon. Luckily you can use both at the same time.
S tier weapon for me personally.
With the same char stats, the GS does significantly more damage, plus strike repeat speed is quicker, further increasing DOT. The only advantages of the lance is that its fractionally longer and you can get it earlier in the game.
I think both weapons are considered top tier for both pvp and pve.
Small difference in moveset, available ashes of war and poise damage. Damage is about the same I believe depending of affinity.
When looking at the stats, they have similar scaling and AP for the same AoW and affinity. However, when you look at the damage they do against a mob you find that the GS does around 15-20% more damage per hit.
E.g. I just went and tested it against a mob and got 932 damage per hit with the lance and 1102 with the GS.
I think you are right.
I've noticed the same issue with Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear and Bloody Halice.
With the same stats I had much higher AR value with the trident but actual damage per poke while bloking was higher when using Bloody Halice rapier. I thought that split damage is to blame. Now I'm not so sure.
It seems that AR doesn't say much when comparing weapons with different moveset.
I guess that only backstab and crit from the front will be calculated the same way for every weapon while everything else will be modified per move. Different moveset - different damage.
I guess people need to actualy test weapons in real life as the damage calculators can be very misleading.
Personnaly, i do prefere the Treespear as a STR/FAITH user, plus the Treespear could use some Enchanting buffs like Electify Armament
