Lost my character.
So i bought the game with steam sale, played it a lot. Got to lvl 141. Almost to the end of the game. Figured I might as well buy the dlc. Found out I still had so much secondary stuff to do. I figured Id try to 100% the base game and see if I still want to end up doing the dlc over that amount of time. So I refunded it. Now can't load up my character. I never went or touched the DLC area,

Your save has been converted. It's too late, you'll have to repurchase the DLC.

The dlc affects the base game wether you visit it or not, now that your save has supported the dlc, it cannot function without it

A bit ridiculous their dlc works that way. I'd understand if you went there and did any of the content.

Even if you don't enter DLC the game still makes changes to your save, like adding new type of stats (scadutree blessings) into the data.

But they can't add a check to the game save? Erdtree dlc false. Do not load erdtree content. Magic

Nah, it's not that easy. You could just go farm all the stuff, refund the DLC, then still have all the stuff.

It would have been easier if the DLC was a separate game mode, but then the experience wouldn't be as smooth as going into the DLC area and back into the base game

I thought it just saved a file to the EldenRing game folder that you could just delete?

Again a check to see if a player has passed an area, You know like if the player has killed the bosses to enter said new area? It really isn't that hard.

But the stuff, weapons, items, spells, AoW, are still in your inventory. You'd have to create an array of all the items or add a boolean flag on every item.

Edit: i'm not saying the way they did it is perfect; quite the contrary. They probably could have come up with something better.

Savefile is still one file for all 10 characters. You delete it and you lose access to all your characters. It's FS fault for bricking people saves like this but it is what it is.

honestly such a predatory practice by them.

insert streamer opinion here. This isn't a feature. The game already does Checks for completed content to unlock areas. This isn't a "feature" The same can apply to save games.

You'd still end up buying the DLC down the road
A bit of an odd choice to refund it, but yeah it is what it is.
You basically don't lose anything by buying it again, just a hassle with Steam

Kinda yeah, you should get some kind of warning when buying and when refunding. So you will think twice before doing any of those. Punishment for a refund is kinda funny though
