You choose what your character is.
But yes, generally fantasy heroes enter castles filled with enemies and undead and fight them all, and loot their treasures. In Elden Ring, you aren't "freeing" most of these places - you are on a quest to (maybe) save the world and shape its future.
Yet he's wanted by the police for vigilante action, and sometimes the public decries him too.
The cool kids have to be cool. Not good, just popular. #WeLoveMiquella

But note that in a quasi-medieval fantasy world, there are no modern concepts like police, vigilantes and criminal villains. I know that wasn't your point, but this still informs how we view a game or setting like Elden Ring. We play a "questing knight", whether a good or bad guy, on a basically holy quest, going up against godlike figures and their soldiers, wizards and enemy knights, monsters, undead and creatures from beyond time and space. Might makes right - personal might even more here than military might, so we take the power of our adversaries for ourselves to, at the end, kill a god and sit down on that troubled throne of Aquilo... the Lands Between. I.e. the premise of this thread doesn't make much sense in the whole context.
What are these posts lately man, oh wait.. This is Steam. Nvm.
lol there is no way to beat the game (without glitches) that don't involve literally storming or bypassing the gates of guarded castles. We are a crazy murder hobo by design, we're the end result of a plan to be used as a weapon to settle something through a fight of attrition.
Its called a war hero. Just gotta make sure your side wins.
