Edit: ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, it worked
They really don't want to admit the dlc isn't 10/10 worthy, I think more people will be honest when the honeymoon period is over. But idk, Fromsoft fans are a very dishonest and rabid group of people.
I love Elden Ring, but i ain't no sheep. DLC has a plethora of issues. Namely -
Weapons:
New weapon categories are not fleshed out enough and one of them only exists to pad the number for marketing, Throwing blades, there's only one and Claws of Night are the exact same thing but not garbage.
There's poor distribution of new weapons among the categories, Colossal Swords and Weapons got 5 new weapons each, two categories that already had some of the most weapons out of any. Whilst others, like flails, hammers, reapers, thrusting swords, claws and whips only got 1.
Enemy Variety/World Bosses:
Not enough new enemies and what new ones there're are pretty lazily done, most of them lack depth in mechanics and attack variety. Only new enemy that felt like it had a complete design were the Fire Knights. There's also a massive overabundance of Trash mobs across the entire DLC, i'd say about 80% of the enemies you'll come across are the shadow peasant trash mobs.
The world bosses in this DLC are a joke, Furnace Golems have to be the single worst enemy Fromsoft has ever created in the history of their game studio. The entire fight is nothing but a gimmick, and there's only two varieties of them, gimmick and ultra gimmick. The hippo's also suck, what happened to the cool world bosses of the original game, instead all they can create is an enemy that flops it's body at you in like 4 different ways.
Most of the world bosses and mini bosses in the DLC are straight up copy and pasted from the base game, Death bird, Dragons(only new thing is an AOE on their stomp, yippe), Demi-Human Queens, Tibia Mariner, Tree Sentinels, Tree Spirits and more i'm missing. The only boss type from the base game that i remember having an entirely new moveset was a crucible knight.
The only new named dragon, aside from Bayle, was Senessax, and he's just a massive gimmick as well. All he does is just spam AOE attacks directly ripped from a base game boss. And the reward for killing him is a joke, something i'll get into later.
The base game liked to reuse world bosses, but at least it went out of the way to make many of them have something unique about them and they always gave something cool and unique, such as every dragon boss having a unique elements and some unique attacks, and they all granted new abilities upon defeating them. The DLC doesn't, all the Hippo's, other than the golden one of course, are the same and all they drop are Scadutree Fragments. There's only two types of Furnace Golems. Every Ghostflame Dragon is the same and you only get one new dragon ability from them. and so on. It's repetitive and lazy.
Exploration:
Much of the world is barren, outside of the main path, the path that leads to the legacy dungeons, which's very dense, it's almost entirely bare.
Worst offenders are the Fingerprint ruins, with a total of two things of worth to be found there, and those places are huge. Second worst offender is the Abyssal Woods, a massive empty area that must be traversed on foot, with paths that go everywhere but almost never have anything, worst part of this place is they hid a scadu fragment in a corner of it.
The 3rd worst offenders are the Cerulean Cost, Charo's Hidden Grave, Scaduview and the river ravines. All of these places are massive, and for the most part empty.
Something this DLC does massively worse than the base game is open world design, so much empty space with nothing in it, not even flowers to pick.
Rewards:
This is one of the things that actively pissed me off, especially with Senessax. Senessax is such a pain of a fight and all you get for your efforts are some damn Smithing stones, couldn't even be bothered to include a new dragon shout. Many of the Bosses drop nothing but junk. You know how when you killed unique dragons you got unique abilites? Not in the DLC, you get one, well, other than Bayle but i'm not talking about remembrance bosses.
The Furnace Golems drop a single crystal tear and a crafting material, in the base game the enemies that dropped tears gave you TWO.
All you get for killing dragons is a heart and no new abilities to purchase.
Hippo's give nothing but Scadutree fragments.
and so on.
Another thing the DLC does really bad compared to the base game is putting stuff everywhere for you to find, even if it was garbage at least you were rewarded for your time. For the most part, the multitude of paths and corners in this DLC are completely empty. It was actually depressing. I spent most of my time in the DLC exploring and for the most part had nothing to show for it other than the fact that I wasted my time.
The abundance of dung messages everywhere attest to just how bad this is an issue in the DLC.
Conclusion:
I could go on about other things, such as the severe camera issues or how the final legacy dungeon is insanely short, but in short the DLC has issues. It has good aspects, like the shadow keep is an insanely good legacy dungeon and what new weapons there're are good, but this DLC is by no means a flawless product.
The DLC feels rushed, the story feels like it was gutted and much of the world feels like it was just left undeveloped. What's the point of making such a massive open world to put nothing in it, again this is a part that's massively inferior to the base game.
Idk if the DLC was over ambitious and they didn't have the time or resources to finish the development or if this was originally supposed to be two DLC's and they just decided to shove whatever they finished for the second DLC into this one and call it a day.
TLDR: DLC is far from perfect.
DLC was a solid 10/10. Good music, good bosses, healthy amount of challenge, great atmosphere. It did so many things right I'm surprised people had problems with it.
