You are no longer fit to be an Elden Lord. Melina expects your Spectral Steed Whistle on her desk by tomorrow. Don't keep her waiting.
I do enjoy areas that you're not meant to ride through AKA the actual content that the open world connects to. Abyssal Woods is just the worst aspects of both being a very sparse and boring open world area that you can't ride through to get somewhere interesting.
I think the only other form of tension the abyssal woods have is the guys who insta kill you, since if you don't know you can parry them its an invulnerable enemy that basically automatically kills you if it notices you. That form of tension wouldn't apply to any other area, unless you just made the whole dlc into a stealth game. Which for me would still not be tense, because I'd have simply refunded the dlc because I hate stealth.
The dungeons you go into are good examples of areas without torrent, because there's stuff everywhere. That's the real problem, there's not stuff everywhere in the open world areas (including the abyssal woods, I don't think its a very good area tbh).
THAT'S THE THING! They really don't. Like, the game says "It's over if they see you" and you can actually escape them. I know because I've done it, I kept rolling, Madness triggered twice but I didn't die and then I just found tree roots and put those between them and me and they eventually dropped aggression. It's a cute area, but it doesn't go whole hog and it's just... tepid. And frankly, I'm kind of glad for it because I think the game is slathered with difficult stuff at my expense, it's just not moody or impressive the way people really try to sell it.
