ELDEN RING
Abyssal Woods is proof Torrent ruins areas
The tension went from 3 to 10 the moment Torrent was removed while in the Abyssal Woods. That horse is the reason the DLC has such empty and boring environments.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t really use torrent until I’ve thoroughly explored an area. I find that by riding around on him, I miss a lot of stuff. The fact that he’s still scared, even after we kill Midra. Makes me think there’s something else in the woods, that we don’t know about.
I'm new. I find that horse to be extremely awkward and I still haven't figured out yet why I constantly accidentally jump off of it while I am trying to joust. I've played 54 of my 55 hrs on foot
Casually insults Torrent. Like, actually insults Torrent. Unfathomable display of maidenless behavior.

You are no longer fit to be an Elden Lord. Melina expects your Spectral Steed Whistle on her desk by tomorrow. Don't keep her waiting.

Took me awhile to stop doing that too. Especially when I can back to the game after 90 hours in, ds2 XD
Is your argument that Abyssal Woods is the epitome of fully designed and enjoyable environments? I would argue Abyssal Woods is the most empty and unsatisfying area in the entire game for exporation.
I actually stopped using torrent most of the time in the base game unless I'm backtracking through an area I already cleared.
Torrent is the reason why Elden Ring is tolerable. Without it the game would be one of the worst games out there!
Woods were the worst area in this DLC. Huge and empty. The only pros of this place is the boss fight.
I swear I saw a phantom riding the moose in that area. I is there a way to enable it somehow?
I think the way Torrent handles frequently undermines how useful he can otherwise be. Great/Colossal weapon L2/R2 absolutely can trivialize Wormface style enemies if you can handle how absolutely awful and terrible it feels to be doing something that feels like playing in 300ms of input delay in a fighting game online.
It's easily the least satisfying area that doesn't allow you to ride in the entire game.

I do enjoy areas that you're not meant to ride through AKA the actual content that the open world connects to. Abyssal Woods is just the worst aspects of both being a very sparse and boring open world area that you can't ride through to get somewhere interesting.
"I don't want to have to walk back here because it takes forever" is not an interesting form of tension.

I think the only other form of tension the abyssal woods have is the guys who insta kill you, since if you don't know you can parry them its an invulnerable enemy that basically automatically kills you if it notices you. That form of tension wouldn't apply to any other area, unless you just made the whole dlc into a stealth game. Which for me would still not be tense, because I'd have simply refunded the dlc because I hate stealth.

The dungeons you go into are good examples of areas without torrent, because there's stuff everywhere. That's the real problem, there's not stuff everywhere in the open world areas (including the abyssal woods, I don't think its a very good area tbh).

So, I made this thread about five minutes into the Abyssal Woods. Like a lot of you said, turns out this area is also 90% empty. Even without Torrent they still can't design a good area.
I think the atmosphere there is cool. It completely fails to be scary because I died so often in this game it became meaningless. But it's great to see the outcome from one of the endings

THAT'S THE THING! They really don't. Like, the game says "It's over if they see you" and you can actually escape them. I know because I've done it, I kept rolling, Madness triggered twice but I didn't die and then I just found tree roots and put those between them and me and they eventually dropped aggression. It's a cute area, but it doesn't go whole hog and it's just... tepid. And frankly, I'm kind of glad for it because I think the game is slathered with difficult stuff at my expense, it's just not moody or impressive the way people really try to sell it.
