how the hell can he be defeated even with an ashes of war summon im level 72 and he just murders me in less than 5 mins each time

What's your vigor? Also try to jump his stomps.

lvl72 is kind of ambitious if it's your first playthrough/first time playing a soulsborne game.

Assuming you're talking about the living Godfrey, not the yellow ghost.
You're underlevelled and not dodging enough. His phase 1 is very easy to dodge around. Phase 2 as well, but helps having HP to survive the occasional kick to the face.

Come back with 60 vigor if you don't want to practice this fight.

Just got to dodge, and maybe level up some more. Should at least have at a minimum 40 Vigor if you want to fight him and still be able to take some hits.

It the yellow ghost Godfrey I'm currently stuck on and not sure atm what my vigor is at

On some playthroughs he's been easy, but a few he's been quite tough. One iirc was with my bleed build bc I think he's immune.

I guess the first thing besides getting vigor to 40 (the person that recommended 60 thought you were at the end game version) is upgrade your weapon and ash summons.

You can find the smithing bells 2 to get your weapon to +12. There's also a lot of somber stones you can find. The summons upgrade can be found in various dungeons.

If you have trouble finding any of these you can check the wiki. You can also the wiki for golden godrey which will tell his resistances and strategies to fight him.

Yellow ghost Godfrey is immune to status effects so don't bother with bleeding or poison.

He is vulnerable to lightning.

Dodge into him, to his left side.
If you use heavier weapon use jump attacks.
