Soldier drops
Do enemy human/humanoid soldiers always have a chance to drop what they are carrying? If I see someone yielding a cool weapon or armor, can I expect it to drop at some point?

I want to avoid having to meta game and risk spoilers but sometimes I see pieces of weapon or armor I find interesting and would like to collect.

Yes, but with rare exception like Crucible Knights or Nox priestesses/monks (they don't drop their gear.)

Apart from bosses also the mushroom sorcerers don't drop their set, it's found in a cave somewhere as a pickup. But the majority of enemies drop the stuff they're using, I've been surprised by the existence of stuff like the rake used by the midsummer celebrants or the garb with a tree growing on your back because it feels like no sane player would ever use them so why bother implementing them?

I'm kinda sad a lot of the SPELLS enemies use don't exist for the player though, Margit's conjured weapons and the poison glintstone shards can't be obtained for instance and they look really fun...

A lot of the Crucible Knights have a 1 time only drop, but indeed no random loot. The Nox do drop their armor pieces.

To OP, Just check the internet what particular equipment each enemy can drop. Do read further cause some enemies don't drop the stuff they seem to carry while the same enemy a little further does, it's a bit weird if you ask me.

I was interested in that axe with thorns that's held by a soldier inside Stormveil Castle (right at the start of the castle when you enter the side entrance). But i think he doesn't drop it.

No, unfortunately not. In most cases Humanoids will drop their armor and weapons, but there are many exceptions, logical ones, as well as very arbitrary ones. As an example for the latter, there is a group of enemies who have both a variant with a smaller shield, as well as a variant with a bigger shield. While the bigger shield is dropped by the enemies wielding it, the smaller shield is only found as a pick up on a corpse in a different area.

If you're interested in a piece of equipment from a certain enemy, you're best off checking that enemy type's wiki entry on Fextralife and looking at the list of item drops provided there. Alternatively, just ask people about it and tell them to avoid spoilers. Should you have any specific question, feel free to ask away here or even add me for any future questions. I know this game almost as well as my own back pocket :er_sweat:

If only we had a bestiary so people didn't have to look up "that shriveled guy near the rocks on a hill drop rate"

Yeah. Even more so with how messy the pages for regular enemies are on Fextralife. Even I have trouble finding what I'm looking for there from time to time. And I consider myself quite knowledgeable about the game.

I think you're talking about the crescent moon axe, they do drop it but it can take a while to farm it.

Oh god no, don't remind me. I spend like an hour farming that shield from the knights where the putrid avatar is. No, it's that one specific one, thankfully it dropped 2 copies in 3 tries.

In most cases, yes. There are exceptions, namely stuff that is a "miniboss" won't drop their gear.

Crucible knights are an example. You CAN get their equipment, but they do not drop said equipment, they are static items found in the world.

There are also examples where only specific variants of enemies drop their equipment. Such as the blackflame monk in one of the mountaintops dungeons (he is the only one to drop his curved sword), and cleanrot knights at haligtree (though I don't remember what specific item they drop here).
