Theory on Messmer
Judging by the dlc and lore about the Omens what if the shadow of the Erdtree is a place where Miquella is hiding the Omens. We know how people felt about people showing omen deformities.
by Messmers context he appears to want to purge any kind of 'evil'
Perhaps he was written out of history because he wanted to go too far.that he wanted to destroy anybody from the bloodline that possesed omen features.
What im saying is that Messmer was outcast maybe even disowned for his beliefs and has come to where miquella dwells to vanquish all the omens.

Miquella here being the good guy trying to preserve them from the fate they would receive above.

Miquella was cursed with eternal youth, Malenia with Eternal Rot, and Messmer symbolizing everything heretical to the golden order and erdtree. Hes built like a godskin, uses fire, snakes, and has symbols of the crucible all over him. but that would condtradict messmers comments in the dlc trailer.

What comments, if you mind clarifying?

In that forsaken place.blood must spill.blood of your fellows,The erdtree faithul(This implicates a dispute within the family)
'They were never saints'they just happened to be on the losing side of war.
Omens were never considered heroes and most of the lands waged a war against them.those of royal lineage got protected though.
It's a posssibility that when they speak about the wrong side they speak of omens.
But the biggest point in the entire DLC iis this phrase'mother wouldst though truly lordship sanction in one so bereft of light.(this sentance alone implies an internal strife) it not just tels us there is a dispute but gives us hindsight to what the dispute is about.

"In this forsaken place, blood must spill. The blood of your fellows, the Erdtree faithful" Whoever said this, it wasn't Messmer, the accent and voice is different. It does make me intrested, however, in who wants the Erdtree faithful dead.

"They were never saints, they just happened to be on the losing side of a war" Spoken by a much more feminine voice (Maybe Miquella?), whoever said it was the same person who told us to touch the withered arm and they wouldn't be far behind. I think your point on the Omens is interesting, but we dont have much to go off untill DLC comes out in terms of this "war"

As for the lordship sanction part, I'm pretty sure Messmer is asking Marika why she gave us (the tarnished) our grace back. This, however, is going off the assumption that Marika did infact give us our grace back, which we're still not sure about.

sorry for clarification i never wanted to imply the phrases were implied to by mesmeer himself.more like the text felt mostly like akin to skalds telling the tale of the situation.
I think the phrases are trying to represent the situation between mesmeer and miquella through the eyes of others.

I do look forward to the story in the dlc but like i said it feels like there is 100% an internal family strife and i feel heavily this may between feelings amongst family over omen blood.
Also i dont feel like hiding omen in the sewers would realistically be enough to protect them.
Not just from omen killers but also to stop them being a problem in the outside world.

Also we have to defeat radahn before unlock dlc along with mohg.i cannt remember but is it ranni who gives us the item further down the line in quest to flip the acadamy upside down.
What if we are flipping other areas upside down in the dlc?

Thats an interesting thought. I remember somebody pointing out that that one carian looking guy in the trailer is the same on the carian inverted tower statue. Adding some sort of mechanic for more flipping levels would definitely be a cool way to add more content to the game without needing more space.

That would be the best alternative ending his questline deserved, anyway.
