ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING

The game lived long enough to become it's meme.
I've been neutral to the whole "souls-like" game mechanics and all of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games that have come out. I beat demon's souls back in the PS3 era and I thought this type of game is not my thing, so I moved on to more enjoyable things.

A decade later, and after being harassed by my friends to try "The best game of all time," I almost decided to buy Elden Ring with its DLC.

Before splurging the money to buy the game, I watched my friends/streamers play this game.

Yeah, no thanks. The memes are real. Every single individual that I observed attempting to kill mobs and bosses consisted of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rolling around like a maniac, hitting the boss once, rolling around like a maniac, drinking a potion, and continue rolling around.

How can this be considered the "Best game of all time"? How is this enjoyable? For the love of God, please don't say it's because the game is "hard."

I do give you the art style of this game is top tier. Everything else is questionable.

I put 170+ hrs into elden ring on xbox. I thought the game would end soon enough after the ~80 mark and kept going even though I wasn't really enjoying it after that point as it just felt too bloated.

I played for another 100 hours...

I regret that. And there was no way I was going to touch this dlc.

The most overrated game of all time IMO.

Here's is my souls history just for the record:

Like OP started with demon's souls on ps3 after the edge 9. Bounced off it.

Tried dark souls, restarted 3 or 4 times, got as far as the slow down area after the sewers early on each time and quit mainly because of the performance.

Played darks souls 2 for around 70 hrs didn't finish it. (was ok game)
Played Bloodborne for around 90 hrs didn't finish it. (good game)
Played dark souls 3 for around 40 hrs, lost my save because it didn't have cloud support for some reason and didn't finish it. (was pretty good game)
Tried sekiro for like an hour or two. Nope.
Played about 20 hours of the latest armoured core. (was ok game)

Fromsoft are the most overrated dev of all time. It's a cult at this stage.

I may retry sekiro cause it genuinely seems to be the most interesting of their games. Other than that it's mostly a hype-train IMO. They are good games but you would think that they are the be all and end all of gaming design if you listen to most stans. They are not. And they are not improving or moving their genre forward IMO.

I don't know whom you were observing exactly, but if you're not exaggerating, then it is painfully obvious that those individuals you speak of simply refuse to use anything other than good ol' rolls and R1 spam.

There are plenty of defensive options besides rolling, there are plenty of ways to close distance, plenty of ranged options, light and fast weapons, slow and heavy weapons, AoE, you name it.

If you just spam roll button like no tomorrow, of course the game is going to look bland. When you start digging in, however, and see what other tools the game offers you - then you'll be able to craft your own strategies and whatnot.

I don't just like ER bosses cause they're hard, I like them because they're engaging. I like them because they feel like tests of positioning, reactions, and memory, and thanks to that they're fun to me. There's no other answer anyone can reasonably give, you fight ER bosses because they're fun to you, and you stop fighting them if they aren't.

I like rolling a lot, and others don't. Not every game has to tailor to every person. The same reasons one person dislikes a game is sometimes the reasons others enjoy it.

like with any game,
it's not for everyone

if it's not for you OP, that's fine, but you don't need to have to reassure yourself that you don't like the franchise as if you feel insecure about having an opinion that's different from most

There are 3 shield classes which would remove the need to roll, allowing you to rely on block. There are parries allowing you to deflect attacks instead of rolling away. There are various magic spells and miracles allowing you to both deal damage with various elements and buff. There are spirit summons to help you to take attention of bosses. There are unga bunga 16 ton hammers breaking boss stance before they can even strike...

What you watched are basic ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, John Elden Ring.

The only thing I got here was that you watched some bad players who are average at best at the game. To understand how great this game is, you have to be at a certain level of skill and clearly you don't have that.

Good for you, I was dreading making a new character to prep for the dlc, what helped me was killing the Tree Sentinel and Margit about 5 times at lvl 1. I was doing another run at lvl 1 vs the Tree Sentinel and I killed it without taking dmg , that felt amazing so I tried to kill Margit the same way , took me 85 restarts, If I was getting hit the run was done , so far I've probably spent about 15 h at Margit , but that was so fun, my mistakes were because I was getting greedy with the attacks, I know his moves well

The dlc is amazing so far , yes the bosses deal a lot of dmg 2-3 shot ,I've killed 4 main bosses and 2 h was the most time I've spent at a boss, nothing compared to last boss in Sekiro , 6 h back in 2019 , killed him in 3 tries last year , that's how these games work , depending how good you are you get stuck at a boss for hours and then when you kill it , feels amazing.

Nothing wrong not wanting to play these types of games, I for one can't comprehend how people eat fresh tomatoes , even the smell makes me sick
