DLC Non-DLC compatibility
Will players that have the dlc be able to play with players that don't?

I might be wrong, but I think in the "base game" yes, but (obviously) not in the DLC realm.

Even if the DLC player has DLC items? Wouldn't that automatically make them incompatible?

Why would it? DLC items are in the game files for everyone, players without DLC installed just don't have the means to acquire said items, that's all.

So DLC items are just in the base game? Does that mean DLC owners can drop DLC items for non-DLC owners?

Of that I am not certain. Can't remember how DS3, for instance, handled this.

In some yes, in others no. The Dark souls games all allowed dropping of dlc items, even if a player didn't own it. But Blood Borne did not. I haven't tried to play with anyone else yet since the dlc started. But I will test and get back at somepoint.
