It's likely he hasn't played in the last 180 days since ban was received and it just cleared on start up/refresh.
I just got banned immediately upon being summoned to another player's world. No third party software, had literally only had half a dozen multiplayer sessions since I only discovered the mechanic today. The DLC update has given bad actors a way to get others banned simply by engaging in multiplayer.
