Wild Theory: Why Godwyn Was Murdered.
WHAT IF..... Lansseax is actually Godwyn's secret consort and thus the very reason he was assassinated?
A demi-god partaking in dragon communion would surely be heresy of the highest (golden) order.

WHAT IF.... Marika forbade her son (Godwyn) from marrying Lansseax, but he outright defied her and did it anyway, a la "the things i do for love..."?
Surely, such treason and defiance can only be paid for in blood and curse - to spurn any would-be demigods from ever attempting anything similar...

so a plot to kill a (demi)god unfolded, but Ranni intervened and 'saved' Godwyn from dying a true, irrevokable death (for what reason, i do not know).

WHAT IF.... Godwyn went to fight and defeat Grand (Lich) Dragon Fortissax for more than friendship and to prove his strength?...
what if he did so, to gain his approval and permission to marry Lansseax and form an unbreakable bond (to solidify the alliance) between man and dragon?
as is standard for G.R.R.M storytelling; the male head of the family has to approve a marriage before it can be sanctioned.
This would explain why Fortissax fights as hard as he does to win an impossible battle in order to save a man who is quite literally bound by blood in family!!!

Godwyn could be Fortissax's actual brother-in-law through his courtship with Lansseax, and be the catalyst for a revival of the age of the dragons. A truly legitimate and undeniable intermingling of the Golden Order and the dragons.
Fortissax is fighting with all he's got to save the father of his unborn nephew/niece - to literally save his lineage - the future elden lord of the realm and king of dragonkind.

HOW ABOUT THAT FELLAS?

What if Godwyn was murdered because he partook in Dragon Communion by choosing Lansseax as his consort?

Maybe he went to fight Fortissax to gain his approval and the right to sanction their marriage?

Maybe Fortissax is fighting an impossible battle because there's more at stake than a good friend - as in; his lineage is literally on the line here.

Maybe Godwyn wanted to undeniably solidify the alliance between the golden order and the dragons by literally marrying an ancient dragon (who may have learned how to turn into a human for that very reason).

The Ancient dragons are desperate to revive their lineage and prevent further devolution of their kind (see the wyvern-type dragons in the game) and Godwyn could be the very catalyst needed to achieve this.
A Pureblooded demi-god.
The perfect seed for a revivification of an otherwise inbred bloodline.

Frankly it explains a lot of the gaps that the story have purposefully left open to interpretation.
its certainly better than "and then the handsome god beat up a dragon because he is cool and strong".

you have to ask yourself the question "why did this character do the things he did?" and you also have to ask "why did he have to die for it?"

Maybe Godrick (direct blood descendant of Godwyn) refers to the dragon he grafts as "A trueborn heir" and "Kindred" for a good reason, and not just because he has gone mad.
however, Godrick's character could also serve as an example of the nightmarish imagery that the other demigod's have in their heads in regards to such mingling of man(god) and dragon - an abomination.
his existence would certainly serve as a living example of just how bad things could be - and thus Godwyn's marriage to Lansseax had to be stopped at all costs - even if it meant killing him.

Lansseax is Vyke's girl, bro. It's in the lore.

In short, I agree. The aggro effect of wearing Serpent-accented clothing(source: Duelist Set effect) is likened to Shabriri's Woe. The people of The Lands Between equilaterally despise Serpents without exception. These are the offshoots of Dragons, which themselves are enemies of The Golden Order. So, probably yes to all of that.

But other possible interpretations exist, as far as the love aspect goes. Not sure about the leaps necessary to conclude all of this. But it's fair to use your imagination to fill-in the gaps.

maybe that's exactly what the game wants you to think.
maybe there's another reason Vyke went mad, hmmm?

Marika was Godfrey's girl... certainly didn't stop Radagon from making a move on her.

i'm not really a godwyn or a dragon fanboy.
i'm definitely not a sucker for romance either (even if this theory makes it appear so)

i live and die for a nice tree sentinel armor set though

that being said; i figured a lot of unexplained gaps in the story are filled by this theory.

i couldn't care less if it turns out i am wrong, but at least i made an effort to find a missing key to the puzzle and wanted to share and hear peoples input on it - including yours <3

Ranni was jealous and wanted to kill her brother, then she killed herself and became an onahole doll.
