When you actually use the ash of war, it consumes FP (mana) but the ash of war itself is never consumed.
what happen if i put another one on top does that mean i lose that special ash ?
even if they can't be placed on other weapon but only their original
All weapons have a default ash of war that's different than the ones you equip. Equipping an ash of war overwrites the weapon's default one, but removing the ash of war restores it. You can't "lose" a weapon's default ash of war.
Some weapons (like boss weapons) just won't let you equip a new ash of war to begin with and only lets you use the special one. I'm not sure off hand if any wepaons with a unique ash of war let you equip one.
Got any recommendations for ashes to play around with, then? Every one I've tried has done less damage then my regular attack.
Keep in mind, some Ashes of War have a R2 followup after activating them.
Flaming Strike for example creates a gush of flames and follows up with your weapon striking through it to buff it with fire for some time.
edit: also, make sure to acquire the proper whetblade to infuse your weapon on such a way that your stats profit from the infusion properly. For example keen /lightning infusion for a dex build, heavy/fire for str, sacred/flame art for fth and so on.
Anyway, in my current run, right now I'm using power stance great swords. On one I have Wild Strikes, each hit dealing more than a normal attack and you can turn it into 2 different finishers, I use those to quickly cut down the poise of giants.
On the other sword I have Stormcaller, which does have 3 phases with AOE which is good for groups of enemies that have low poise, and enemies that tend to heav their weakpoint above you (dragons, death birds), because the hit box also goes vertical. Also, stormcaller is incredible difficult to deal with in pvp if you aren't one of the meta boys with 100 hours in pvp, and once you catch the other player, he's unlikely to escape. Also, NPC invaders are extremely easy dealt with.
Lion's Claw is also fun for the animation alone.
For curved swords and Twinblades I like spinning slash, because enemies where it breaks poise per hit will feel like meat put into a grinder.
Those are all early ashes you can get within a few hours playtime.
Slap this thing on the broadsword and you'll just make mince meat out of enemies and bosses. It's outrageously powerful because of the massive posture damage it does. I had to consciously stop using it as it felt it was making the game into a joke.
