Buying the game after playing with Family Sharing will keep my save?
Hello everyone,

I'm currently playing Elden Ring on my account with Family Sharing. I now want to buy the game but I'm scared of losing my save if I do so.
I read on another discussion that usually, for most games, it keeps your save when you do that but not all of them. For example Dark Souls 3 doesn't seem to keep the saves and achievements.

Has someone done that with Elden Ring?

Thanks

If it's on the same computer then it should be fine, worst case scenario you just have to
1) Make a backup of the save from C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing and move it to a different folder or your desktop. Save file ends in .sl2
2) Buy and startup Elden Ring without family sharing
3) Create new game
4) Overwrite that new save game with the backup you made
5) Check to make sure everything went smoothly

CLOUDSAVES: may be a bit wonky so you probably want to disable them before doing this and keep that save backed up, DON"T DELETE it until you've been able to play multiple sessions with Cloudsave turned back on and your save file isn't overwritten and reverted back to the step 3 new game.

Also misread your post a bit and everything below is probably irrelevant to you but I will leave it in case it ever helps anyone else.

IF FAMILY SHARING ON A DIFFERENT PC:

If on a different PC then it won't automatically transfer, even with cloudsaves (didn't when I tried), but you should be able to transfer the save file itself to the new PC.

The savefile should be in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing or similar if you have different drives.

1) Copy the save file in that folder, which should end in .sl2
2) Keep a backup of the old file and transfer the copy to a flashdrive (googledrive probably works too)
3) Start new game on new PC to create required folders.
4) Go to the save folder on the new PC and overwrite the new game save with the save you want.
5) Test and see if it's working. Also check the CLOUDSAVES part from above.

This is a good way to get yourself banned. The save file knows which Steam account it is associated with, and if you connect to the ER network with a save file from a different Steam account it will flag you for cheating and you'll catch a ban.

I don't know the answer to the OP's question, but I suspect you'll have to start over. I don't know how family sharing works exactly, so maybe if it's the same account it will let you keep it. If it doesn't work with DS3, then I expect it won't work with ER.

How does one play Elden Ring in the first place without paying for it? It's a commercial product. (No, I'm not trolling, this is an honest question)

The Keebler Elves sneak into your house and install it on your Commodore 64.

Family Sharing, as the OP said. I've never used it so I don't know how it works, just that it's a thing. I assume its so kids can have their own accounts with their own set of achievements, cloud saves, etc. and still be able to play the games their parents buy without needing to buy more than one copy.

if you are wanting to play is safe and have them on the new account

easy way go to C:\Users\(USER)\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing\765XXXXXXXXXXXX and copy the ER0000.sl2 and paste it into your account ID eg. 762XXXXXXXXXXXX. and play

OR the hard and pointless way mainly used to give someone else your char while keeping your own as well

1. go to C:\Users\(USER)\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing\765XXXXXXXXXXXX go to your user account.
2. backup ER0000.sl2 it is what has your save file. rename it to something easy to identify
3 . play game and make a char save and close.
4 . download https://github.com/BenGrn/EldenRingSaveCopier/releases/tag/v0.0.2-alpha
4.1. run it. and in the source file add the original save you backed up. and destination file the new save file made
5. copy form (original save ) select your char you wish to copy.
5.1 copy to (new save) select the slot you wish to place it in. dose not matter what one. can to it over and over with all the chars in the save just have in other slots.
slap copy and start game your save will be present

both ways work

banned yeah no wrong. have done it from day 1 the game was out never been banned or blocked out. do a little research before spreading rumours. (unless its a cheated 99 all stats lvl 123) then yes then you could get swatted by the server

Or, before downloading any tools and eventually messing up your save file, which might get you banned as well:
Just buy the game and check if your characters and achievements are still as they were. Either are linked to your profile ID, so I don't see a reason why they should magically disappear as soon as you switch from playing the game by using the family share feature to actually owning it.

Remember that you have a two hour window ingame to refund Elden Ring after you bought it, should your save file for some reason not be accessible.

Didn't know the saves were tied to your account id, but the save should have their id as family sharing should treat the game like you own it for the most part.

Cheat detection is wonky at time though and there is a risk, don't know how much, that they could be banned but if the OP doesn't want to risk a ban then they should play in offline mode and then delete the save after their first playthrough.

saves are tied to the profile account they are made on, if you try to use it on another ban hammer for 180 days will happen. Their are ways as stated above to do it.
